Canada / Peter Crouter (1762-1844) UEL?
« on: Sunday 10 April 16 23:43 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to determine if Peter Crouter was a United Empire loyalist. He was born in Dutchess County, New York, in 1755. Records show that he fought in the American Revolution under Colonel Ruttan. He came to Canada in 1796, after Governor Simcoe issued his famous proclamation.

He married Catherine Stephens abt. 1780 in Rockland County, New York, USA.

Peter was granted a parcel of land in Haldimand, and also bought land in Ameliasburgh. However, I have not been able to locate land grants in order to determine if he applied as a loyalist.

I am looking for information on the parentage of Mary MacEachern. She married Angus Gillespie in 1813 in Kilchearan, Argyllshire, Scotland and the family later immigrated abt. 1830. to Canada. Online family trees suggest that her parents were Angus MacEachern and Sarah MacDougall, but I am looking for confirmation.

Canada / Currie family -- Mariposa Twp., Ontario.
« on: Saturday 02 April 16 22:46 BST (UK)  »
Alexander (Alex) CURRIE was born abt. 1818 in Islay Island, Argyll, Scotland and married Mary (Gillespie). Known children from this marriage include: Margaret Currie, Christine Currie, Mary Currie, Janet Currie, Ann Currie, Donald Currie, Christina Currie, May Currie, Alexander Currie and Isabella Currie.

In 1861 the family is living in Mariposa Township. There appears to be three other Currie families living in the area at the same time.

Neil Curry, 34; Ann, 28; Archy, 9; Malcom, 6; Christina, 4; Peter, 1.

Duncan Curry , 38; Christina, 29, Mary, 4; Flora, 3; Lauchlin, 1.

John Curry, 55; Flora, 47; John, 25; Neil, 18; Duncan, 15; James, 10; Alexander, 6; Angus, 4. Next reads: Mary, 20; Janet, 17; Ann, 12; Jane, 8.

Are these families related? I have not been able to find parental records!

According to my research Neil's wife, Ann, was also a Gillespie. Duncan may also be referred to as James who was married to Christina Gillespie. I have not been able to locate Flora's maiden name.

I also have not been able to locate these families in the 1851 census, so I am thinking they were located in Scotland at this time.

Sligo / James BOYD and Mary Ann Taylor
« on: Saturday 02 April 16 03:18 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information on James BOYD (1780?-) who was married to Mary Ann Taylor some time around the 1800s. His daughter, Ellen, immigrated to Canada in 1831 with her husband, Matthew Johnson. In her obituary it states that her father, James, was an Irish physician and that she was from Sligo, Ireland. The obituary also states that she attended a ladies' boarding school. I am not sure if James or Mary immigrated to Canada; however, Ellen's obituary suggests that he lived to the age of 83 and Mary the age of 87.

Antrim / James SMITH
« on: Sunday 20 March 16 19:30 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for the information on James SMITH and family. According to census records in Canada he was born some time around 1827. According to a newspaper record on James Smith Jr. (1862- 1948) he was born in Belfast and immigrated as a young child. James Sr. was married to Elizabeth, however, there seems to be some confusion in regards to her maiden name. Some records suggest MacCauly, others McCartney or Colley.

Known children from this marriage include: Sarah (b: 1844 - Ireland), James (b: 1862 - Ireland), Elizabeth (b: 1864 - Ireland), and Mary Ann (b: 1865 - Canada). However, if these records are correct James would have been 17 at the time of Sarah's birth. Census records suggest that she was born in 1857, however, according to her gravestone, she was born in 1844.
