Kildare / Re: Mitchells of Betaghstown, Clane Parish, Kildare
« on: Friday 30 October 15 16:53 GMT (UK)  »
I notice an old post on Rootschat from 2011 that lists some surnames in a Mainham cemetery in Clane Parish, Co. Kildare.  Not only is the name Mitchell included, but it seems to be remarkably close to Betaghstown.

Does anyone have any insight to where I could find out more information?  Or if the graves have been transcribed somewhere?

The family was Catholic.

I've combed through the registers on the internet fairly well, I think.  Though there are some pretty early records for the parish, there is a big gap, which many of these records would seem to fall into, from 1789-1825, so far as I know there are no death records up either.

I am somewhat leaning to the idea of a grave or graves.

A while back I came across an old genealogy.com post, circa 2009, which definitely involved a branch of my family.  The poster I believe was a fourth cousin, and we shared a GGG grandfather named James Mitchell of Betaghstown.

Personally, I only knew of James through three sources.  Firstly, my GG grandfather's marriage certificate.  Secondly, the 1853 Griffith's Valuation.  Thirdly, his 1836 marriage and the baptisms of his children.

What amazed me was this gentleman had found the birth and death years of James and his siblings.  He also found the death years of two of the children of James, pre-civil records. But I have no idea what his source was, and haven't been able to duplicate the information.  He had the advantage of working locally and I have wondered if perhaps he found some graves or else the church had a period of records which were never put online.

James 1796-1853
Thomas 1799-1875
Christopher 1808-1876
Daniel 1810-1856

Two of the children of James:
Anne 1849-1850
Patrick 1845-1846

I haven't been able to contact this gentleman, and was wondering if someone here was clever enough to put me onto the source.

Kerry / Re: Glenbeigh Parish Registers - Martin Connor and Julia Breen, marriage

I've seen the odd one, here and there.  Sometimes, i wonder if many were tossed out.  I can't think of any other explanation in some cases, when there is an odd year.

I've wondered if perhaps they became more common nearer to 1900, but I haven't seen many records around that date, so I can't say for certain.

Kerry / Glenbeigh Parish Registers - Martin Connor and Julia Breen, marriage
« on: Monday 14 September 15 17:57 BST (UK)  »
My GG grandparents Martin Connor and Julia Breen lived in Curravaha, Glenbeigh Parish, Co. Kerry.

I haven't been able to find a church marriage record for them, and that is exactly what I am interested in.  Not positive they married in Glenbeigh, or a neighboring parish, as one of their sons did (in Dromod). It should be said Curravaha is at the extreme southern end of Glenbeigh Catholic Parish.

Their first child seems to have been born in 1860, but the record is somewhat incomplete from damage.  I believe they had five children total.  Patrick b.1860, Thomas 1863, Timothy 1866, John 1869, Bridget 1872, and of course, I have the church baptism records for these.  All were born in Curravaha, as was likely Martin himself in 1827.

I am hoping to trace my GG grandmother's line and that is why I am so interested in the marriage record.

I have noticed a few marriage records purporting to be from Glenbeigh on IrishGenealogy.ie but no match.  There seems to be numerous errors in the index though.

Another thing I would be interested in would be if there is a church record of Julia Connor's death.  From the Civil record indexes,  I would suppose she died in 1898, but the reported age of 52 seems to be significantly off.  I believe she did not die in 1879, but in 1898.  I was hoping  that there would be a church record with a more accurate age.

I would also recommend Irish Genealogy Toolkit.  It really helps you to understand the process of finding and ordering civil records.  I know I made a lot of progress using them along certain sides, they can help one connect to older records.

It is curious.  Enfield to me seems like it was an important town in the area.  Funny not to be able to find any earlier info on it or the surrounding area.

Thank you, Sinann.  It is good to have this resource.

I have also seen that 1878 ref., but am not sure what it means.

I know several parishes, just a handful really, never turned over their records to the Irish government.  One other example being Killorglin, Kerry.  In the case of Killorglin, I believe that the Irish government never took films of the records, but the records do certainly exist in some form.  Weirdly, the Irish government itself hosts a site where indexes to Killorglin can be searched, although apparently they don't hold any of the images.

In another case, that of Clane Parish, Kildare, I know that the government holds many of the records, but they seem to not hold all of them.  More records seem to be available locally, possibly filling in the gaps in the listings, say for example the 1790s.  Possibly some death records too.  I deduce this from a researcher who said he lived near Clane having found names and years I couldn't find on the internet.

For all I know, they may still be records held locally.  They may have simply not trusted anyone with their older books.  I've tried to contact the parish once, but to no avail.

I've not been able to find any information about the records for the surrounding Catholic Parish.  Does anyone know whether the old records survive or are amendable to search?

The period I would be most interested in would be the 1830s-1840s.

I know the Irish government does not seem to own copies.  In another similar case, that of Killorglin, Co. Kerry, I know there are at least indexes.  But I've simply not been able to find any info on, I believe it would be called, Rathcore Parish, Co. Meath.

It is somewhat frustrating, as I have a possible lead, I'd like to test out, which comes from the Tithes.
