Lancashire Lookup Requests / more help please?????
« on: Sunday 12 March 06 00:46 GMT (UK)  »
???  Hello all you helpful people.
If at all possible and if you have the time would someone be able to help me solve my mystery once and for all.  It's quite complicated so i will try to be brief!
a lot of new info has come to light recently. I am researching my paternal family tree.  My maiden name is Knowles.  My Grandfather died when my dad was young (17). He never spoke of his family much.  It has come to my attention that the reason may be that he didn't know himself or wanted to keep it secret. His name was Percy Knowles born 1913 there is some arguement over whether he had the middle name william or not! His parents are definitely a John William Knowles and Elizabeth Hulse.  John William Knowles was KIA ww1 I believe in ypres 1917. He married Elizabeth Hulse born 1888 (the daughter of a Henry and Mary Augusta Hulse) in 1912 mosley common st johns. I believe elizabeth had an older daughter named annie who lived with her parents and was illegitimate. when her husband was killed in action she met someone else and had another son but never married to keep her pension. she later died leaving my grandfather to be raised by her partner hence the sketchyness. it is his father John William that i am trying to trace and it is not easy. I know they were colliers and lived in Manchester what area i have no idea. Bolton has been mentioned. i think his mother stayed close by her family though and that was more wigan area.  i need to find all possible john william knowles' in the area to rule them out.    please help it is driving me mad!!! ???  :-[

??? i have a bit of a sticky problem.  here goes - if anyone can help you could solve a bit of a mystery! and it would be hugely appreciated.

in the posession of my uncle is a medallion about 4 or 5 inches across in a bronze coloured metal which has the name John William Knowles on it and was awarded for giving his life or killed in action for the great war which i assume is ww1.  now i am trying to find out what year the above person died so i can work out whether the man is my great great grandfather or great grandfather and whether my grandads younger brother and sister shared the same father or not!!!  He was from lancashire Manchester and the family were colliers.  what is the likelyhood of a 50ish year old going to fight? i thought he would be too old but not sure. as i know nothing about military stuff at all.
p.s. my grandad could have been born in either 1913 or 1918.  his mother married a john william knowles in 1912.

As you can see its a bit of a problem. I have no other information unfortunately.

I would be really grateful if there is anyone with access to censuses for 1901, 1891 or 1881 would please look up a John William Knowles in lancashire -
All that i know is that he married in 1912 to an Elizabeth Hulse at st. Johns in wigan so he must have been a child in 1901 at least. i know that Elizabeth was born in 1888 in tyldesley? as for john william i have no idea but i think the family were from leigh/bolton/tyldesley/hindsford or atherton. i know that there's quite a few places listed but if you could help me rule out some of them that would be fantastic.  by the way john and elizabeth are my ggrandparents on my dad's side.
p.s. i have no idea of his parents names i didn't know his until earlier when i found the marriage registry. thanks em

Shropshire / completed- can anyone help locate rodington heath
« on: Sunday 01 January 06 00:55 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me about Rodington Heath is there anything to know?  Being born and raised East Yorkshire i know nothing!! My Dad's father's family were from here it seems i only found out recently and not from my dad.  Agricultural labourers or shepherds and miners of some kind according to documents i have just seen.  Can anyone tell me where it is exactly - i have found Rodington on the map.  They are the Hulse family which my dad's cousin has kindly informed me are originally from this area but later 19th century one moved to Manchester my gggrandad i think? i have copies of some certificates i.e. Reg dist: Wellington Salop - Encall Magna 11-12-1865 for a Henry Hulse mother being an Elizabeth Chetwood + Father Joseph Hulse.  i believe that he had a daughter Elizabeth Hulse who married someone with the surname Knowles my ggrandad, the first name elludes me and this is my grandad's surname and my maiden name, my grandad was from tyldesley or bolton in manchester i can't find his birth registry though(1913ish).  I am very new to this and i seem to spend most of my time going round in circles or hitting walls because there is not really anyone to ask left now. Is there anywhere else i should be looking?  any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you
