Australia / Brisbane mystery!
« on: Friday 16 August 19 11:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I think there are actually a few mysteries...

First I have little Charles Owen MARTIN, son of Henry MARTIN and Mary HALE.  Charles was born at Goodna, Queensland 17 Jul 1877.  According to his death notice he died due to 'congestion of the brain' at the residence of Mrs Robinson, Lilley St, Brisbane.

I don't know who Mrs Robinson is.  Could of the family been staying with her if the child was ill and visiting a doctor in Brisbane from Goodna.  Maybe they had known Mrs Robinson previously.  Henry and Mary had arrived from England in 1864 and had lived in Brisbane until about 1874.

I can't find a Robinson and Lilley St mix on Trove except for the death notice.

Little Charles is buried at Toowong Cemetery Brisbane.  He is in a 9x9 plot with the RILATT/RYLATT family.  I also don't know who they are.  He is the 2/10 buried.  This is Portion 13, Section 33, Grave 12... So 13, 33, 12.  The Section immediately behind 33 is 38 and by coincidence in 13, 38, 12 is a Robinson family which makes me wonder if a mistake has occurred somewhere.  I think it is Dawson and Mary ROBINSON but I can't see them being at Lilley St on Trove.

The 1903 electoral roll has Henry and Mary MARTIN in Nobb's Rd Redbank Plains.  I can't seem to find a Nobb's Rd in modern times.  Henry is noted as a Warder, even though he would of been about 73.  Do you think he could of worked at Goodna Asylum?!

Interested in your thoughts.

Kent / Yemmerrawanne.
« on: Monday 22 July 19 11:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi team

I’m just reading about Bennelong and Yemmerrawanne, two Australian Aboriginals who went to to England with Governor Arthur Philip in 1792.

Yemmerrawanne died at Eltham on 18 May 1794 and was buried in the local churchyard.  There is a headstone but there are many stories about the headstone being moved and his remains removed to bury white people.

I’m just wondering if anyone might know anymore?!?!

As I’m ageing I’m starting to feel so much grief for Australia’s indigenous people, especially in the early years of colonisation.

So so wrong...

Hi team

I can’t find Thomas HEWITT born c1795 Walesby Notts and wife Martha born c1801 Notts on the 1851.  They were married in Worksop in 1850.  Both had been previously married, Martha being Mrs MILLS.

I haven’t got a death for either of them either.  Thomas’ first wife Sarah died in Feb 1850 in Worksop.

Thanks

Nottinghamshire / SHAW, Whitesmiths and Ironmongers of Bridge Street - Worksop.
« on: Tuesday 04 June 19 12:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi

My gr gr gr grandfather was George SHAW c1798-1848 a Whitesmith of Worksop.  It appears he wasn’t baptised until 1817, I don’t know why.  Given this, he was the son of William SHAW and Mary UNWIN.

George had a brother John, a dealer in game and another brother Reuben, also a Whitesmith of Bridge St.  Seems Reuben was very successful but because George died young his family suffered.  Possibly some other siblings too.

Previous post re the family...

Can anyone help me with info on any of the businesses in Bridge Street Worksop.  Probably Shaw and Sons or the like.  I’m not sure if the father William SHAW c1762-1827 was also in the trade.

We are so lucky to have a spoon made by one of my forefathers and brought to Australia in 1852.  Probably made by George SHAW but we don’t know.  The story is there were a number of them hand made and given to each of the children.  We don’t know if any except ours still exist.

Hi team

Is someone able to check newspapers to see if the Harriet CASKEY who died at Tonawonda, NY state on 20 October 1950 might be this same lady please.  Her husband was John Benjamin CASKEY and she had 3 daughterS.  She was last seen on the 1940 census in Buffalo.

Many thanks

England / Phoebe Shaw... what became of her?!
« on: Monday 29 April 19 03:30 BST (UK)  »
Team

I have Phoebe SHAW baptised at Worksop Nottinghamshire on 11 Dec 1828 to George SHAW and Hannah PALMER.

On the 1841 she is with her maternal grandmother Dorothy PALMER aged 10.

On the 1851 she is with her brother John SHAW and his wife Alice.

On 12 Mar 1862 there is a marriage of a Phoebe SHAW to a James ISLEY at Hammersmith London.  Phoebe states her father as George SHAW, Whitesmith.  That is correct!

A daughter Emma born in 1863 in London and another in 1870 in Melksham Wiltshire.

I’ve found a Jame and Emma arriving in Queensland in 1863.

A son Edward was born to James and Phoebe in Sydney NSW in 1867.

I also found online that a James ISLEY and Phoebe Shaw ISLEY went to Canada and the USA and a death of an Edward ISLEY in 1951 in Los Angeles who stated he was born in Sydney Australia.

I think I’m looking for ‘another pair of eyes’.  I’ve never heard anything about this before.  I’m in Australia and even though it was a long time ago, there is no family legend about another SHAW relative ever being in Australia.

I’m wondering if my Phoebe isn’t the one who married James ISLEY but I can’t find her on any census.

Limerick / Where is ‘Inchacomb’...
« on: Friday 08 February 19 00:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi team...

I’m trying to locate ‘Inchacomb’.  I believe it to be somewhere near to Galbally.

I have the family MULLINS, some who migrated to Victoria, Australia prob in the 1860’s saying that they are ‘Native of Inchacomb Co Limerick’.

I’ve found the marriage of Thomas Mullins and Ellen Daley in 1835 which I believe is the parents.

I noticed there are some other Mullins posts for nearby locales too.

Hi team

Can anyone enlighten me on The S.W.P.A. Australian Rules Football team?!  I think it has something to do with the Air Force or maybe the AIF in general.
