Still no sign of the marriage to get Mary Anne's father's name.

Roche is a common surname over here.

Tara

At least now I know that I am definitely looking for Mary Ann Roche, born in Dublin, Ireland.  But as you say probably still a needle in a haystack.

Marriage June quarter 1846 Manchester  volume    20 page 635

Bridget Ward and Thomas Greenwood.

In 1851 there are Wards with the Greenwoods.

Hiram's birth certificate would confirm her name.

Bridget's father is named as James Ward, Labourer.

Thanks.  I need to get Hiram's birth certificate to be certain.

The 1851 census supports the name Ward.  In the household of Thomas Greenwood, age 32 and Bridget age 28, are Hiram age 4, James W age 3, Betsy Ward age 23 and John Ward age 14.

Jane Greenwood also shows mother as Roche in 1879

On the 1881 census, the family were living in Market Street, Hollingworth, Cheshire.  Hiram Greenwood age 36, Mary Ann age 35, Mary H age 12, Thomas age 7, Fanny age 4 and Jane Ann age 3.  My grandfather wasn't born until 1883.

Hello,
http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk
Cheshire BMD shows John William Greenwood born 1882 with mother's name Roche.
Any child's birth certificate would comfirm mother's name.

Regards

Heywood

Thank you. John William Greenwood was my grandfather.  He was born about 1883, Hollingworth, Cheshire.  He is on the 1891 census age 8, father Hiram Greenwood, age 44, mother Mary Ann, age 43.  Ecclesiastical parish Tintwistle Christchurch, reg. district Ashton Under Lyne.

Registration of births started in 1864. Mary Ann's maiden name will be on children's birth certificates.

Registration of Catholic marriages also started 1864 (from 1845 for non-Catholic ones). You can search for the civil registration index but searching for Hiram Greenwood doesn't bring out any results-
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347

Catholic Parish registers are now online but not indexed so you need to know a parish then browse through scanned images.

Lots of church records also here-

Thank you, that is useful as it reminded me that I was told that my grandfather (Hiram and Mary Ann's son) had been brought up a Catholic.

Hello -

There is a Hiram Greenwood who married, possibly, a Mary Ann Cox in Manchester in 1850.

craggagh.

My great grandmother Mary Ann was born in 1848, and her first child was born when she was twenty, in 1868, so the marriage would have been something like 1866, give or take a year or two each way.

Greenwood is a very common name in West Yorkshire, spilling over into Manchester, and there were a lot of Hiram Greenwoods.  My great grandfather was born about 1847 in Hollingworth, Cheshire.

Any general or specific help welcomed. I am searching for information about two Irish female ancestors.  One was called Mary Ann, married name Greenwood.  She was born about 1848 in Dublin, Ireland, and is easily found on the Censuses for the Manchester, England area as a married woman.  On the 1891 Census she is shown age 43, and appears on the 1871 Census age 23, married to the same man, my grandfather's father (Mary Ann is my grandfather's mother).  The earliest trace I can find of her is their daughter Rebecca Greenwood was born in Salford, Lancashire about 1868, when Mary Ann was about 20.  I can't find the marriage information for Hiram Greenwood and Mary Ann, and wonder if the marriage was in Dublin, rather than Manchester.  I remember being told by an older relative that Mary Ann's maiden surname was something like Roch/Roche/LaRoche.

Her husband, Hiram Greenwood, later appears as a widow, and the 1891 Census is the last place I found Mary Ann.

My main problem is I don't know Mary Ann's maiden name.  And I don't know how to find Irish birth information.

The other Irish female ancestor is Hiram's mother Bridget, born Ireland about 1823.  She married Thomas Greenwood, and appears on the censuses, eg 1851, and Hiram's birth record as living in Manchester, England.  Again, I don't have a clue what her maiden surname was or how to find it, or how to find Irish records for 1823.
