Louth / Re: Cathan Mathews, Kilsaran, Louth. Died between 1823 and 1828?
« on: Sunday 17 December 17 20:03 GMT (UK)  »
Just on the offchance that anyone has come across any of the names or can cast any light.  Bridget Ward married Thomas Greenwood in Manchester on 29th June 1846, and they had two little boys, James age 3 and Hiram age 4 (born 1846, Hume, Manchester) on the 1851 census.  They were on the 1851 England census living in Manchester, Clegg Court, Hume,  with Bridget's (half?) siblings John Ward age 14 and Betsy Ward age 23.  The whole family completely disappear from the records after the 1851 census, with the exception of my great grandfather, Hiram, who re-appears on the 1871 census with an Irish wife, born Mary Ann Roche (1848-1900), born in Dublin, where they have two little girls, Mary Ellen born 1870 and Rebecca born 1867, both girls born in Salford, England.  There is no record of any marriage in England between Hiram and Mary Ann, so presumably they were married in Ireland.

I assume the whole family returned to Ireland to live with relatives some time between the 1851 census and the 1861 census.  That is, Thomas and Bridget Greenwood and Bridget's two half siblings, Betsy and John Ward, and Thomas and Bridget's two sons James and Hiram.  And that Hiram married Mary Ann in Ireland.  Only Hiram ever appears on the English records again, and of course Mary Ann.

Thanks.  That sounds like possibly where my great grandfather was working, and where he lived in 1867.

Irwell Bleach Works in Pendleton, Salford.

Grace's Guide has an entry or two ...

https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Irwell_Bleach_Works

Thanks.  There is quite a lot of information about the Irwell Bleach Works in Pendleton, Salford.

http://salfordonline.com/15065-solved-mystery-of-new-archeological-dig-on-whit-lane.html

It sounds like a huge building on the banks of the river Irwell, which had been a cotton mill and was converted with a lot of expensive equipment.  It sounds as though they were processing cotton.  Incredibly interesting, this cotton had come all the way across the Atlantic, through Liverpool and up the Manchester Ship Canal, to a huge complex factory on the banks of the Irwell.

Lancashire / Bleach Works in Salford in 1867?

I found that my great grandfather is described on his first daughter's birth certificate in 1867 as "Labourer at a Bleach Works".  The family were living at 3, Sandywell, Greengate, Salford.

Was there a well-known Bleach Works in this area?  Maybe there were loads, and it could have been one of many.  I assume they were bleaching cotton, but I don't really know what a Bleach Works did.

This daughter, Rebecca Greenwood, was born on thirteenth July 1867 in Sandywell, and died in April 1871.  Her parents were James Hiram Greenwood (who was later just known as Hiram Greenwood) and Mary Ann, maiden name Roche.  I think they must have been married in Ireland as there is no existing marriage certificate for them in England, and Mary Ann was born in Dublin, Ireland, and Hiram's mother was Irish, living at the time of the 1851 census in Salford, then Hiram's mother, father and his mother's two siblings vanish and never re-appear, though Hiram, with Mary Ann and their two small daughters, re-appear on the 1871 census, living in Salford.  I assume the whole family was living together in Ireland.

The passenger list for Ethel Greenwood 1932 travelling with her daughter Patricia was a married lady.

Her husband Mr Harry Greenwood  131.Sankey Street Warrington  is given as last address came from

Rosie

Ah thanks, I will forget that one.  I thought it might be a reason why I suddenly couldn't find a whole family.  I think it is me not being good at using the records.

I think Ethel marries a Tom WOODHEAD 1940  Glossop.

She dies Sept Qtr 1983 Tameside Cheshire dob given as 13 Sep 1902.

Free search of the 1939 register has:
Ethel    Woodhead (Greenwood)    1902    Glossop M.B.    Derbyshire with same dob.

Maureen

EDIT: Oh well-may as well post it anyway. :)

Thanks.  I am sifting through all this. Ethel is confusing and I can't cross check either of those possible husbands.  With your information I will have another go.

Cheshire / Two generations disappear from all records.

Almost everybody in two generations of a family who were previously very easy to find in the records seem to just disappear after the 1911 census, I can't find any records for any of them.

Hiram (1846-1909) and Mary Ann (1848-1900) Greenwood are very easy to find.  Their daughter Mary Ellen was born in 1870 in Salford, then they moved out to Charlesworth, Derbyshire where Thomas (1874-1932) was born and married Martha Bennett (1873-1941).  They are very easy to find, and all their children are on the 1911 census, Mary Alice born 1899, Ethel born 1902, Lily born 1909 and Frank born 1910.  I can't find anything definite about any of these children after the 1911 census.  There is a possibility they emigrated to Quebec, Canada, but I could be making a completely false link there.

The younger siblings of Thomas Greenwood also seem to completely disappear from all records.  Mary Frances was born in 1876 in Broadbottom, Cheshire.  The last record she appears on is the 1891 census as daughter, single, age 15, Jack Frame Tenter Cotton, living at Earnshaw Street, Hollingworth.  I remember being told that she worked as a domestic living in servant in that area.

Jane Ann was born in 1879 in Broadbottom, Cheshire, and she too last appears on the records in the 1891 census as daughter, single, age 12, scholar.  There is a tiny possibility that she is the same person as a listed marriage with no husband name shown on the record, in Glossop, Derbyshire in July 1899.

The only remote possibility I can find in the records is maybe a connection with people sailing to Quebec, Montreal from Liverpool.  There is probably another explanation for all these people being impossible to find in the records.  I searched marriages, deaths and censuses and found nothing else.

Hiram's grandmother, Fanny Greenwood born 1801 Heptonstall, had moved with all the family to Salford, where two generations were born, then moved out to Charlesworth after she was widowed, and is listed as a housekeeper in Charlesworth, Derbyshire, on the 1861 census, with her daughter Mary and two grandchildren, both from different children, Henry Greenwood age 7 and Joseph Smith age 2.  So there is a strong family link with Charlesworth after that, and a possibility that family members were domestic servants.
