Hi

Can any of you clever people help me break down a 30+ year old brick wall in my family tree?
I have extensive research into my family done over nearly 40 years but this is my bugbear!

John Johnstone Cumming had a long military career of which I have details and died as the Governor of the Military Knights at Windsor Castle in 1843. He served in the 8th West Indian Regt mainly in the West Indies and whilst there, married a baroness from the (then) British Virgin Island of St Croix. They had 4 children all born in the West Indies but came home to christen them all in Drumblade Church near Huntly. His wedding in Guadeloupe in 1811 was also recorded at Drumblade Church so he clearly had connections with that area. His first wife died in Barbados in 1821 and when he remarried in 1826 in Scotland he was living at Lessendrum House, also in Drumblade. He was also a JP for Aberdeenshire around 1828, The problem is that all the John Cumming births around 1786 in Scotland do not state the key middle name Johnstone so I cannot be sure which one is him! He wrote a pleading letter on his military record in 1828 and seems to know a lot of prestigious people so I think he came from quite a good, well heeled family.
I cannot definitely connect him to the Huntly branch of the Cumming family and could never assume  a baptism is correct without firm facts to back it up! So there is my brick wall!
I have tried maiden names of his mother possibly being Johnstone and the children's names holding clues to the parents names but I'm still stuck. I would really appreciate any help you can give me. My mum has been on this journey with me for 40 years and is now 92 so as it is her side of the family I would love to crack this while she is still with us :-) I have heaps of extra info if you want anything added please let me know.

South Africa / John Hennah Nettleton born 1878, can anyone find his death please!

Hi
I am related to John Dering Nettleton who won the Victory Cross in 1942 flying a Lancaster Bomber.
I have extensive research about his family but have a couple of missing facts.

His father John Hennah Nettleton was alive in Cape Town in 1942 but I have been unable to get his date of death. I believe it is in the mid 1950s. His wife Ethel lived until 1990 aged 102! The other missing date is for John's sister Iris Ethel Nettleton born 4th Apr 1919, I am unsure if she married or not and cannot establish when she died either.

Thanks in anticipation,

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Re Elizabeth Sarah Reffell

Hi

I am tracing my son-in-law's family tree for his Mum's 60th birthday next year and her maiden name is Mandell. I traced her family back as far as Alfred John Mandell and then found he was born in New Zealand! I searched online and found and ordered his birth entry and it stated that his mother was Elizabeth Sarah nee Reffell! Since then I have traced his father going to Australia, marrying Elizabeth there, having 2 girls who died in infancy and then in 1864 they left Australia and settled in NZ. John Mandell died in 1879 but I haven't traced a death for Elizabeth yet. I did however find a Newspaper message in 1879 asking her to get in touch with her brother EFR (Edward Forrester Reffell). The last entry I have is a newspaper shipping list for 31st Jan 1884 when she and a Mr Mandell (maybe Alfred John her son?) left NZ bound for Plymouth. I Googled EFR and found this post of yours! That gave me Elizabeth's parent's names so I'm most grateful. I know EFR married twice and died in Ongar in 1889. If you have any extra info I'd love to hear from you and will happily share the bits and pieces I have found.

Kind regards Elaine Gane

Hi again. I know when my Thomas was born and his father was a Royal marine so it looks like it is my man! Below is link to his entry to Greenwich as an orphan of a Marine killed whilst serving.

Hi. I am hoping to find out anything extra that might be on the burial record of the above. He died as a result of the accident at the launch of the Princess Charlotte in Portsmouth on 14th Sep 1825. It appears he was Master Mate on HMS Victory but I am hoping to establish who his parents were!
