World War One / Regimental numbers and enlistment dates
« on: Saturday 24 November 18 08:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I saw in a post (sorry, I can’t find it now) that it is possible to work out when a soldier enlisted from his regimental number. I have looked on the Long long Trail website but cannot see any pre 1920 lists or tips how to do this.

One of my great uncles was John George Mayne born South Shields in 1889, who died in France in 1916. He was a private in the Northumberland Fusiliers, 8th Battalion, # 20574. As he was in the Balkans by 13 Sep 1915 (first theatre of war as per his Medal Roll Index Card) I understand that he must have volunteered prior to the introduction of the Group Scheme but I wondered if it could be further narrowed down. SWDITGW says he enlisted in York.

Thanks for any help.

GD

Much appreciated and oops re the use of ‘team’.

I keep thinking of the bit in the trailer for “They Shall Not Grow Old”, with the men and horses pulling large guns through a stream at considerable speed. It puts a different perspective on things when I realise that somewhere in the Middle East my great uncle would have been doing the same kind of thing, though presumably less water and mud involved.

Just to mention I have belatedly seen Great Uncle Albert’s RFA attestation on FindMyPast.

In the column for Campaigns etc it has Med 15-16 and Mespot 16-18, confirming the information you have provided. I should have searched for this before, sorry, but to be honest without your explanation I probably would not have understood the references.

Thanks again - your help is greatly appreciated.

P.S. Have just seen the latest post and that is terrific and takes care of my Sunday morning.

There have been a couple of references to Howitzers. Is it reasonable to assume he would have been part of the team (sorry, don’t know the correct term to use) firing Howitzers?

Thank you so much Shaun and Max. Something woke me very early this drizzly spring morning so it was a wonderful surprise to find all the hard work and excellent information.

World War One / Re: Can I find out more about my great uncle’s WW1 service?

Hello

I would like to know more about my great uncle’s service in WW1.

Albert Frederick Mayne was born in South Shields in 1891 and died there in 1927. He has an uncle of the same name who also served, born 1870, and a younger cousin also with the same name who died in WW2.

This particular Albert was a Gunner in the Royal Field Artillery ( no. 81010) and his medal index card says his first theatre of war was Egypt 1 July 1915. The index card says (I think) he was entitled to the Victory, British and 15 Star medals.

Could anyone help me with more information about his service? He seems to have had a sad life, as although he was 23 when he enlisted, he was already a widower as his young wife had died from TB and his two babies also died. He did not remarry after WW1.  I would like to gather more information so he can be remembered.

Thank you for any help.
