Cork / Help please with reading a parish record
« on: Monday 04 June 18 01:35 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I would be grateful for help in reading this entry in the baptism records of Ardfield & Rathberry parish:

https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634436#page/131/mode/1up

The entry is for 23 January 1862. The child's name starts with J, & the parents are Cor_? Leary & Ellen Calnan, [place] C M , sponsors J _? Calnan & Margt Leary

Can anyone help with the forenames of the child and father? And does anyone familiar with the area & register know what location is intended by C M?

I have tried to attach a snip but it may not work.

Thanks for any help.

G.S.

Just to say I am enjoying reading this thread and am hugely impressed by what has been uncovered. I don’t have any connection with the family (though who knows, the way it’s tentacles are reaching out) but it is helping me understand a bit more about the people, times and places.

Welcome to Rootschat Markos!  :)

I agree that DNA tests are not yet able to accurately tell different European populations apart. There has been so much movement by different groups.

You may well be able to get some matches though there are many complaints here on Rootschat that most matches are from the United States as more people have been testing there for longer. You may find connections with family who migrated to the US. You might also have to wait a year or two to get good results and for more people in the Ukraine to test. But someone has to be first!

I understand that Ancestry has the largest number of test results but that My Heritage possibly has the best coverage of Continental Europe.

When you compare the costs of different tests, do not forget to check postage. In some cases it is included but it is extra for other companies.

On FTDNA for example you can see the family trees of people you match with, without having to pay extra. However that is only if people have created a tree (many are too lazy or not interested enough) and have left it open for you. Some people make their trees private.

This link might be helpful      http://isogg.org/wiki/Autosomal_DNA_testing_comparison_chart

Good luck and please let us know whether you get matches.

Hello Dominic1

It is not just Ancestry users - I have the same issue with fTDNA.

There is a recent long thread with many people raising similar issues. I particularly liked the response #137 which included the comment:

" you need to bear in mind that many people submit a test purely to see if they really are Irish/Finnish/Pixie".

I live in hope that one day someone will get in touch/ respond to help me with one of my many mysteries.

Hello Lana

I can't even remember when I last looked at my ethnicity results, let alone remember what they are. One day DNA tests may be able to tell us more about the journeys of our ancestors but at this early stage they are not worth more than a shrug and a smile. I don't worry about the differences between the two DNA tests I have had because neither result means much.

This board has had some good links on the topic which I can't locate now when I want them  but here is a very short article that caught my eye ( go to Myth 2)

https://www.familytreemagazine.com/premium/dna-fact-or-science-fiction/

On the bright side, with all those tests you must have lots of DNA matches who would love to hear from you so you can together work out the linkages and maybe solve a mystery or two in someone's tree.

All the best with your research.

You can also highlight a match for further consideration by selecting the star beside the match. Mind you, you have to then remember why you put a star there.

There is a notes section when you open a match - I haven't tried this yet but it may be a good way of noting whether you have contacted the match or any bright thoughts you may have had.

Re query about wishing Ancestry would notify us about the new matches, if you select the "new" button near the top of the screen on the page showing matches then the new matches will show up at the top of the page.

Your Ancestry DNA home page gives you the total number of fourth cousin or closer matches and so you can see at a glance if any new ones have arrived, then go to your matches page and then select the 'new' option.

Hope this helps.

Just picking up on those replies which put forward the theory that if they open their tree to DNA matches, no one will bother contacting them. I have given up contacting people with locked trees as the few I have tried contacting either don't reply or show no inclination to help work out where the connection is.

I am steadily working my way through contacting matches which give enough of a tree to help me work out sideways and where possible backwards to see if there is a possible connection. I am also contacting closer matches without trees in case they have done enough research to help work out how we match. Some reply and some don't but they are generally more forthcoming than those with locked trees.

You don't have to put a full tree on with your precious photos etc. You can also just have a tree visible to DNA matches. I only have a rudimentary tree on Ancestry but it should be enough for people to see names. We are all entitled to our different approaches and I respect that but I don't think curling up like a poked hedgehog gives you the best value for money from your DNA test.

Oh, and you may wish to check your settings to make sure they allow you to receive messages from contacts. Mine were set to not receive messages and it took me a few days to realise this.

Very interesting thread though and great to read different perspectives.

Hi - wondered if this site would be of some background interest. I didn't see Stove come up in the crew list index but has interesting info about the British Southern Whale Fishery if you navigate up a level:
