Hi,

I have a bit of an outline on this Sidney Rhodes but would love to find out more about him.

Sidney Rhodes was born 14 March 1912 in Sculcoates.  The registration of his birth was delayed into the June Qtr.  His mother's maiden name was McQuade.  He died in Bridlington, E. Yorkshire in July of 1985.  Although it has been a while since I worked on this family, I remember reading somewhere that Sidney and his wife had two children, although I could be wrong.

- his mother's first name
- father's name
- date of parents' marriage
- date of his marriage to Elizabeth Gardiner (have been told that he married this woman.)
- children? -could be they are living in Bridlington?  Maybe that's why Sidney retired there.
- date of his death

I would be so grateful for any information on this man.

Many thanks,

Carleton

Hi Geoff,

I saved your message of Oct. 25, 2012 in which you stated:
"My great grandfather William Cursham went to Florida with Arthur".

Which William Cursham was this?  Was this William G. Cursham, Arthur's father?  If so, I have his death as 31 March 1900 in Scarborough, North Yorkshire.  There is another William Cursham (father of William G.).  This William was born abt. 1788 in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts; he was married to Mary Lambert.

Did you find any information on the orange grove in Fla. or anything more on Arthur?

I would be interested in knowing what you found out.

Hello vbain,

I'm not sure who this Jane Speakman is who is buried in Mt. Hamilton Cemetery.  There were many Speakmans in Hamilton-Wentworth.  Can you tell me when this burial occurred?  Was it sometime between 1953-1957?

I know there is a Janet Speakman, wife of Janet (Leyland) Speakman who died 25 March 1937 in Hamilton and was buried in Eastlawn Cemetery in Hamilton.  Janet (Leyland) Speakman was the mother-in-law of Mary Jane Speakman.

Hi Jacquie,

Sorry about my late reply.  Of course, I should have realized this given the date.  My frustration took over as I am having trouble find out information about this woman.

I will try the newspapers first before going to the library.  Thanks very much

Canada / Death of Mary Jane SPEAKMAN
« on: Wednesday 03 October 12 05:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am looking for the possible death of Mary Jane SPEAKMAN which I believe took place between 1953 - 1956 in the Toronto area according to directory listings I have.  Her last address was 35 Gamble St. East York, Toronto, where she is shown as "Mrs. Ben Speakman".  With her is her father-in-law, James.  There is no sign of Benjamin in this listing as there was in 1935 and 1940.

Mary Jane TATTERSALL (Jennie) Speakman was the wife of Benjamin Speakman and mother of Doris, born abt. 1921, Ernest, born abt. 1923 and Robert, born abt. 1924.  It is my understanding that Benjamin and Mary Jane's marriage and the subsequent birth of their children took place in the U.s.  There might also be another daughter, Barbara, however, I don't know when she was born.  I am grasping at straws here as there could be two scenarios ....#1, Benjamin and Mary Jane split up prior to 1940; #2, she really did pass away.

In 1957, Benjamin is shown with a new wife, Elizabeth Jean Alliss, known as Jean.  I have no idea when they married.

I would be most grateful for any help.

Thanks much.

To Kyt:

am presently searching Pathfinder No. 405 (R.C.A.F.) Sqn. from WW2.  Lancaster III  PB477 (Call Letters LQ-B) was logged off  at 1554 hours 2 Jan. 1945 by the Control Tower at R.A.F. Gransden Lodge in Cambridgeshire on a raid to Nuremberg, Germany, with 7 men aboard.  It crashed at Rohrau near Nufringen, killing 5 men; two were captured the following morning and interned at Stalag Luft 1 until they were freed by the Russians in May of '45.

W/Cmdr. Kenneth John LAWSON, D.S.O. & Bar, D.F.C., Pilot, R.A.F.V.R. (Killed)
Sgt. Sidney RHODES, Flight Eng., R.A.F.V.R., P.O.W.
P/O Stanley Herbert FITZHENRY, Navigator, R.A.A.F. (Killed)
S/L Nathan CRAWFORD, D.F.C. Bomb Aimer, R.C.A.F. (Killed)
F/L Eric Cecil DUKE, D.F.M. Wireless Operator, R.A.F.V.R., (Killed)
F/O Gerald Edward GEEVES, D.F.C. Mid-Upper Gunner, R.C.A.F. (Killed) (my uncle)
W/O1 Dorland G. PLYLEY Rear Gunner, R.C.A.F., P.O.W.

I have quite a bit of information on some of these men but not all of them.

The ones I am interested in are Sgt. Sidney Rhodes, who spent the better part of 4 months in Stalag Luft 1 POW camp along with W/O1 Dorland G. Plyley.  They both survived their ordeal.  Rhodes remained with the R.A.F. until he retired at a later age and Plyley lived until 1969, having married and had two children.  I am not aware of any awards for these two men.

P/O S. H. Fitzhenry of the R.A.A.F. was killed.  Again, I am not aware of any award presented to him.

I believe that S/L Nathan Crawford was awarded the D.F.C. but am not 100% sure.

F/L Eric Cecil Duke might also have been awarded the D.F.C. - again, not sure.  He previously was a member of No. 51 Sdn.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
