I wonder if he was Thomas James and went by either? I hate when they do that.

Alec, if you can find some deaths on the social security death index, you can attempt to get some obits, which are usually free or really cheap. That can give you some names of possible living relatives to contact.

I think I have Laura in 1930 in Chicago:

Thomas Cowood, head, owns home, 58, married at 26, b. England, immigrated 1906, is a checker with the railroad car mills(?)
Laura, 57, married at 25, b. England
Harry, son, 29, b. England, painter, painting contractor
Eddie, son, 26, b. England, electrician with a construction co.
Frederick, son, 24, England, telephone installer
Arthur, son, 22, b. Illinois, salesman at drugstore
Ruth, dau, 16, b. Ill

Working backward, I have found the family in 1920, all the same, with son Thomas, 21 living with them. And again in 1910, minus Ruth.

And I have found Thomas Jr in 1930, with wife Loretta, 27. He is a machinist with the railroads and they have been married about 5 years. No children listed here.

You can go on www.familysearch.org and search for social security death records, which could lead you to some living relatives who can fill in the gaps.

Looks like I have Harry in 1910 through 1930, in Chicago, he is married to Maude (in 1910 listed as Mary) and a commercial agent with the railroad. It looks like they had one son, John (Jack), born about 1911.

I have found a passport application for Daisy dated 1907. She lives in Chicago. Her father was naturalized on 20 March 1903. They sailed on the SS Richmond. Daisy is listed as a music teacher and she is planning to go abroad temporarily.

I have Eleonor in the 1900 census in chicago:

Waller, Thos, head, b. Sept 1864, married 15 years, b. England, emigrated 1888, I can't read occupation, as there is something written over it.
Elonor, wife, b. Nov 1864 in England, married 15 years, 4 children, all living
Daisy, dau, b. Jun 1886 in England
Harry, son, b. Aug 1889 in Ill
Percy, b. Oct 1897 Ill
Thom, son, b. Jan 1900 Ill

I can't for the life of me find them in 1910, but I think I have some of them in 1920 and 1930 In Chicago.

1920 (not sure if this is him)
Waller, P, 26, Head, rents, b. Ill, parents born England, bookkeeper in stock yard
Elinor, wife, 23, b. Ill, parents b. Germany
Morris, son, 4 1/2, b. Ill
Ralph, son, 5 months, b. Ill

In 1930, I find a Percy, 31, married to Lillian, no children. He's an engineer for a car manufacturer.

Let me look around for the others, or possible others.

Kath

I am so glad this topic was revived. I have been trying to figure out what to get my mom for Christmas. This might be the perfect present.

I did find a quite a few trees on Ancestry for Samuel. Always taken with a grain of salt, but they could be helpful. One tree lists his marriage to Sophie in 1851 and Mary in 1855. If you don't have Ancestry, I would be happy to contact the more viable trees for you. Send me a PM with your email address if you want.

My my. This is very intriguing. I had a look at both census records. In the index on Ancestry, for 1870 there is the Samuel that you found Nell and another Samuel with wife Sophie in Fountain Green, Sanpete, Utah Territory. With them are Samuel 14, William H 13, and Sophie J 9, all born Utah. I think this says Samuel Sr works in saw mill. In the 1900 census, it looks like son William is just above Samuel and his wives (?).

yes I realise that Andrea, there's occassions where you have to give certain information to find an answer, I think what irked me was the ignoring of my attempts to contact this person

James

I think that is what would bother me also. I am always excited when I find someone researching different branches of my family and do everything I can to contact these people, to share information and make a new family connection. I don't understand why someone wouldn't want to get in touch. I have no problems sharing, and I don't mind people putting my dead rellies on their trees, but be nice. I had one branch, I contacted the woman, shared with her, she was rude to me, took her tree off Ancestry, and now I see she has a new one up, with all of my information. they are her relatives too so can't really get upset, but she was so nasty to me. And there are a few gaps in her branch I'd like to fill in, but she will have nothing to do with me.

You have to take the good with the bad I suppose.
