Berkshire / Shinfield – Welch / Simmonds / Davis
« on: Tuesday 01 October 19 22:38 BST (UK)  »
I have been searching for years to find the English family of my 2nd Great-grandfather.  With the help of this forum in a previous post and recent DNA findings I believe I have found the answer.  I started with his name Harry Welch and born in England (from family) and a birthdate of Dec. 10, 1851 from the Canadian census.

I believe he was born Henry Davis Welch, Dec. 10, 1851 in Shinfield, Berkshire to Henry Davis, a soldier, and Jane Welch.  (I have a copy of this birth certificate.) A Jane Welch, daughter of George and Lydia Welch, married George Simmonds in 1854.  Through Ancestry DNA matches, I am related to two descendants of Jane Simmonds.  I have reached out to one of them through the Ancestry message service but have not had a reply.

I am looking for help on a couple of fronts.

First I cannot find Henry / Harry Welch in the 1861 census – he was born too late for the 1851 census and was likely in Canada by the 1871 census.  I am guessing he was fostered / adopted by relatives or neighbours.  Are there any other records in Shinfield that might prove useful?

Second – can anyone suggest where I might get information on Henry Davis to start a search?  Far too many with that name if I can't find any further information.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Linda from Canada

My ancestor Iver Iversen Aunet s shown in the 1801 Norwegian census with a family position of "Mand".  Google translate isn't helping - can anyone tell me what that means?

Thanks

To Boopdogg - I did get the information from the Calgary library.  Claude Baker was my grandmother's brother - her name was Beatrice Baker.  So that would make us second cousins.

I have very little information on Claude and his family other than some names plus some old photos that were in my parent's boxes of photos.    Would you be willing to help me fill in the missing information on your side of the family?

I have a lot of information on the Baker ancestors that I can share with you if interested.  Probably easier to continue the conversation through regular email as I can attach reports from my genealogy software and photos, etc.  I can be reached at (deleted as per request).

Thanks.  If there is any other info in that database I would appreciate it.

Both show up in 1878 on the church record for Harry's wedding so that all fits.

In some later census records Harry lists 1867 as the year he arrived in Canada so that fits with his service duration as well.

My ancestor's name was Harry Welch.

Here are the details:

Canadian census April 1971, Quebec City

Henry Welch - soldier (soldat in French)
Age 23
Born in England

On the same page there is a William Welch - soldier
Age 27
Born in England

I am interested in William as well as a William Welch was the witness to my ancestor Harry Welch's wedding.

From research into regiments stationed in Canada I suspect they both would have been in the 78th Regiment or the 60th Regiment (1st Battalion).

Thanks for any help

Where is the best source of information on British soldiers of the 19th century?  I have a name, age, location served in April 1871 (Canadian census), most likely regiments.  I would like to know if the soldier stayed in Canada (then likely my ancestor) or returned to England and, if possible, where soldier was born.

If someone can do "lookups" of this type of information, I would be happy to provide the details.
