I would not have found them listed under "Todd"!!!! James was actually registered and baptised in Scotland as James Tod Herbert (just the single d at the end of Tod). Mind in the 1861 Edinburgh census Jessie Catherine has her surname recorded as Williamson.

In Scotland it is customary to have a married woman's maiden name on her memorial stone which is helpful, and when I am at some of my social groups ladies are often referred to as "Jane Smith who married John Brown".

Many thanks for all that information - quite a lot to get my head round, especially when all I wanted (at first) was to establish where the family went! Now i have an awful lot to record and ponder over and I am really grateful as no one (living) knew what had happened to them, I was told that they had "gone to Scotland" and as that is where I now live had traced Joseph's father, Philip in Edinburgh (and before that to London and his father back to Durham where they are a branch of the well known Herbert / Harburt / Harbottle clan) but that line just "left the page" so it is a real thrill to be able to add to the tree.

Cemetery details:

Record for Jessie Catherine Herbert
Date of birth
Unknown

Date of death
16 July 1924
Minniehaha.

I found that Charlotte born in Edinburgh died at sea on 16 May 1865. I think the date given in the obituary for James T Herbert's immigration to New Zealand is incorrect (1864 in James's obit and 1865 In Jessie Catherine's). I think they must have been on the second voyage of the Resolute which sailed from Glasgow.

I wonder of there are still family in New Zealand and if they know that the family originated in Durham, England? There are a lot of descendants still in England and a few in Scotland!

Wow thank you so much. A lot to read there and I am so grateful.

I am trying to write up as much as I can of the Herbert family (my Great-Grandmother was a Herbert) before it all gets lost and forgotten.

I'm just wondering if anyone has come across any of these HERBERT names? Joseph was a boot and shoemaker, born in London in 1835, he married Jessie Catherine Williamson in Edinburgh in 1858 and their surviving children are James Tod (born Edinburgh 1859) and Charlotte (b Edinburgh 1864). Another child, Elizabeth died in infancy.

I have them on the 1861 census but no further trace of the family. I think there is a James Tod Herbert in New Zealand in the 1920s and as the spelling of "Tod" is unusual it could be the same man or a relative. Any help gratefully received.

Philip Harbut and Ann Pattison married at Durham St Oswald 10 Mar 1796. They had other children who were baptised at Durham St Margaret - so far I have found Maria (Mary as above not baptised at DSM), James, Philip, William and Ann. I hope this might help someone else.

Thank you so much to everyone who checked. I am so very grateful.

Elvet (Old or New) makes a lot of sense - I'm not so sure about the RC connection but it gives me something else to check out and will teach me to keep an open mind.

And I also appreciate the extra information as it is nice to know and can mean there is another lead to follow when the next brick wall is reached.

Once again I am very grateful to everyone who has looked. I generally take all online transcriptions and indices as guides having seen some "interesting" errors in many.

I am just starting to write up my findings in a format more accessible than boxes of loose papers and as I go through things I am finding quite a few loose ends - reminding me of how inexperienced i was when I started my quest well over 20 years ago. There is never a beginning and never an end when it comes to family history.

Durham Lookup Requests / Harbert / Herbert (or varients) St Mary, Durham
« on: Saturday 04 May 19 16:35 BST (UK)  »
Could any kind person please check to see if there is a baptism for a Mary Harbert (the last name may have a spelling variation) around 18 January 1797? The LDS index gives the parish as "St Mary" so I don't know if that is St Mary Le Bow or St Mary the Less, although I would take a guess at St Mary the Less. Ideally I'd like to know who her father was. Her mother's name was Ann or Anne.

There is no hurry for the information so please don't make a special trip.

With 7 children there could be a lot of descendants.

Are you prepared to buy birth or marriage certificates to confirm family links?

Have you looked to see if they are in a family tree on Ancestry or any other websites?
In fact, have you looked to see if anyone on here is researching this family, as a starter?

I'm actually looking for a friend of mine and he has already searched a number of pay for and free sites with several dead ends and some incorrect online trees.

I thank everyone for their help, it is much appreciated. Finding living descendants is never easy.
