I wonder if these naming patterns are a Celtic thing.  Us Scots seem to have used a similar naming pattern too - can make for much confusion if you have a Robert who has four sons and all his four sons name their firstborn Robert.  It gets even more confusing when looking at census records and they all live in the same street.  Many times I've been adding a family only to discover that I've been looking at the wrong grandson of the original Robert (especially easily done when they're all coal miners for example)

Good luck in sorting out your Davids

This has been an interesting thread.  My great-grandfather was a surfaceman and his son (my granddad) a signalman.  I'm just wondering if my great-grandfather had been doing his job at the time of the war (he was retired by then) if he'd have been involved in doing something similar.

Hi Ruth,

I noticed that too about the Ancestry records.  I was blaming it on the sketchiness of the records once the Statutory Registration came into effect.

I wish SP did a subscription service instead of the credits, which I usually buy in 30credits blocks.  This allows me to search and view 5 certificates a week (assuming that the records I want are on the first page).  One day I'll be able to afford to buy all the credits I need to view the entries for my family and put whole family lines "to bed" so to speak.  Anyone know what the winning lottery numbers are for next week lol.

I just recently upgraded my Find My Past subscription as I my mum's family are based in England and I thought the 1939 Register would help me locate them and get more information.  I wasn't wrong there though as I finally got my grandfather's proper dob and discovered that he'd skipped up from the Cambridgeshire/Suffolk border to Lincolnshire with the family in between my mum's birth and marriage.   I also discovered his brother did marry - we'd always thought he'd stayed single.  At least they saw sense and incorporated the Register into their subscription, even if you have to fork out an annual subscription to be able to get access this is a far more economical way of doing things as you also have access to a whole pile of British newpapers and other records which don't appear anywhere else.

Thank you again, Ruth.

Regards and best wishes,

Kay

Hi Forarian,

Thank you for the extra information.  I always keep meaning to look up the entries in SP but due to financial constraints at the moment I am only concentrating on direct line ancestors.

This part of the country is like a goldmine for me where family is concerned lately as they all seem to be connected.  I have found the son of one line of cousins working as an ag lab on another cousin's farm in one census.  The thing is the only connection between the two families is a grandfather, so families must have been closer in those days.

Anyway, thank you again for your help.  I'll certainly try the IGI again and when I have some spare credits will look up SP.

Regards and best wishes,

Kay

Thanks Norrie,

Joan may be connected but I've not come across her yet  ;D

I'll keep her in mind.  This is my brother-in-law's family so not one I'm actively pursuing.  Thank you again.

Regards,

Kay

Technical Help / Re: Ancestry driving me mad!!

You're welcome.  I think it may also be a "free weekend" which can slow the site down and throw up some problems.  I read something about it but because I'm a subscriber I tend to just scroll past the posts telling us about them.

They having problems again?  I've not tried adding someone since this morning and it was working properly at that time.

Have you tried a different browser?  I use Firefox, but I know there were problems with some working on Chrome a short time ago.

If you're on facebook, go to their page https://www.facebook.com/AncestryUK/?fref=ts and see if anyone else is reporting issues, it may well be that Ancestry are unaware of any issues and you can also report it on there.

Regards,

Kay

I am looking for a little help with the family of James Ross and Ann Young.

This is what I have so far (may be wrong) but has been gleaned from the Census records.  Approximate birth dates are in brackets.

James (1845) and Ann (1853) married in Strachan, Kincardineshire in June 1872 and had a son, Frederick born at Aboyne in October 1872 (yes, I know a 3 month pregnancy!).  They then moved to Midmar.

Their children Allan (1875), James (1877), Edward (1879), William (1880), Jane (1883), Rosina (1885), Emily (1888), Alice (1890), Donald (1894) and Norman (1897) were all born in Midmar.

From what I can understand James farmed Bankhead.

Ann was the daughter of David Young (1821) and Jane Middleton (1822).  Jane is my 3rd Great Aunt.

I haven't been able to find their (the children's) birth details under Midmar on Ancestry, but I haven't looked on Scotlands People yet due to financial constraints.  I was wondering if anyone who knows the lie of the land up there which other locations I could look under for birth entries.

Any help with this part of the world would be most appreciated.
