Yorkshire (West Riding) / Matthew MOXON marrying Ann
« on: Sunday 10 April 16 20:37 BST (UK)  »
I'm having trouble finding a marriage for my 3x great grandparents Matthew Moxon and Ann.

Matthew Moxon was born abt 1833 in Thorpe Hesley/Kimberworth in Rotherham, and Ann was born between 1827 and 1833 in Thorpe Hesley/Kimberworth in Rotherham (I think).
Their first child Herbert Moxon was born in 1858 in Thorpe Hesley, so I am presuming that they married somewhere in the nearby area in the years before Herbert was born.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Marriage between William Venables and Elizabeth
« on: Sunday 10 April 16 20:04 BST (UK)  »
I have 5x great grandparents called William Venables (sometimes spelled Venable) and Elizabeth (I don't know her maiden name) - but can't seem to find a marriage for them.

Their first child (that I can find so far) was born in 1819 in Tipton, Staffordshire, so I based my search there, but could only find a marriage (on Ancestry) between a William Venable(s) and an Elizabeth 'Burton' in Worcester in 1804 - which would leave a big gap between the marriage and the birth of their first child.
Added to this, I think that William and Elizabeth were both born in Staffordshire between 1791-1796, so their marriage couldn't have been much before the birth of the first child in 1819.

Any help with this would be a greatly appreciated.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / CHARLES HENRY PARKIN, Miner of Rotherham, 1893-1979.
« on: Saturday 09 April 16 19:59 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to research my great grandfather's family, but I'm not having much luck.

His name was Charles Henry Parkin (born 23 Jan 1893 in Rotherham, died 1979 in Rotherham) - he married Elsie Cook from Chapeltown in 1917 in Rotherham. Charles Henry was a coal miner by occupation.

Apart from the birth index confirming that he was born in Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1893 in Rotherham, I don't know where he was from, or who his family was. While looking for his family in Rotherham (using the names Charles Henry Parkin, Charles Parkin and Henry Parkin) I haven't found any families which could be possible yet.

I'm hoping someone will have more luck than me in finding his family - any help with this would be appreciated very much.

England / VENABLES family in Staffordshire and Warwickshire
« on: Saturday 09 April 16 19:17 BST (UK)  »
I'll get straight to the point; I'm having trouble tracing the Venables line of my family past my 3x great grandfather.

My 2x great grandmother was Clara Venables (born 1880 in Birmingham, died 1963 in Rother Valley in Yorkshire). She had 9 siblings; Maria, Hezekiah, Hannah, Alfred, Patience, Emily, Benjamin, Elsie and Florence Laura.
Clara's (and the other siblings) parents were Robert Davis Venables (1845-1891) and Patience Perrins (1847-1903).

Robert Davis Venables is the real mystery for me; he was born about 1845 in Dudley, Staffordshire, and died in 1891 in Rotherham. He was a wheel smith by occupation.
In all the censuses I have found for him, his name is listed as 'Robert Venables' (without the 'Davis'). In his marriage to Patience Perrins on 11th December 1864 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, his name is listed as Robert Venables again, but his father is listed as Robert Davis - and I found a birth record for a 'Robert Davis Venables' at the right time in the right place (based on what I had for the later censuses), so this is what I presumed his name was.
With the name of 'Robert Davis Venables', and his father being 'Robert Davis', one line I considered was that his mother had the surname Venables - but I couldn't find any Davis's marrying a Venables.

Any help with tracing Robert Davis Venables's family would be hugely appreciated.  :)

Ireland / McQueeny and Cullen families from Ireland
« on: Friday 26 February 16 13:58 GMT (UK)  »
While tracing my great grandmother's family, I've come across the surnames McQueeny and Cullen.
This is based on the marriage of Catherine Mcqueeny and Thomas Cullen on 10th February 1873 at St Bede's, Rotherham, Yorkshire, England. According to the census I have for them, both Thomas Cullen and Catherine Mcqueeny were born in Ireland (I don't have a more precise location than that).

Catherine Mcqueeny's father was called 'Jacobi' Mcqueeny (which I believe translates to James Mcqueeny, and Catherine was born circa 1855 in Ireland).
Thomas Cullen's father was called Yoannis (Joannis?) Cullen (which I believe translates to John Cullen, and Thomas was born circa 1852 in Ireland).

I've been unable to find a baptism for either Catherine Mcqueeny or Thomas Cullen, but any help on that would be much appreciated.
Please note, Mcqueeny can be spelled a number of different ways - MacQueeny, MacQueeney, McQueeney, and originates from MacSweeney).

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Ashforth family of Burncross/Chapeltown/Sheffield
« on: Friday 26 February 16 13:11 GMT (UK)  »
(I've only just joined Rootschat so I hope this is in the right place!)

I'm currently tracing my father's paternal line - the Ashforth's. It was all going well until I hit a stumbling block;
my great grandfather was Samuel Ashforth (1886-1952) from Burncross. His father was Elijah Thomas Ashforth (1851-1922) from Chapeltown. Elijah's father was Abraham Ashforth (abt 1802-1879).
I found only one possible baptism record for Abraham Ashforth - at Sheffield's Cathedral Saint Peter on 15 September 1802, with parent's listed as John and Hannah Ashforth.
I've been unable to find the background to John and Hannah Ashforth - I found a possible marriage for a John Ashforth and Hannah Heaton in Rotherham on 7th March 1791 in Rotherham, although I think this refers to a John and Hannah who lived (and had their children baptised) at Wentworth.

Does anyone have this John and Hannah in their family? It would help greatly if anyone could help - it seems strange that if these are the same John and Hannah as the parent's of Abraham (my 3x great grandfather), then is it possible that they had some children baptized at Wentworth, and two children (I found a James Ashforth baptized at Sheffield also, with parents of John and Hannah Ashforth) baptized at Sheffield?

Thank you for any help :)
