Hello all,
First of all I hope I'm on the right forum as I wasn't sure whether to just post this on the Shropshire page.

I have an Emily Lewis, who was the daughter of Thomas Lewis and Sarah Tisdale. I looked for a 1841 census of them together (Emily was born in 1828 in Shrewsbury), and found one - only of Emily Lewis - she is living with some other people, listed at the bottom of their household. I do not know if her parents had passed away or were still living, and I don't know if Emily was related to this family she was living with in 1841.
The main thing I wanted to ask here was about an 'F.S' in the occupation part of the 1841 census next to her name. She is only 13 years old at this point. It lists the head of the family in this entry, with his wife and presumably his children, then Emily at the bottom.

Is this 'F.S' a reference to her relation? I was wondering if it could be a regular reference for something, like referring to her being a fostered child?

Many thanks for any help,
Holly

Yorkshire (West Riding) / PIGOT/PIGGOT family of Conisbrough/Doncaster, 1700's
« on: Monday 13 February 17 17:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I would really appreciate some help with tracing the family of CHARLOTTE PIGOT (sometimes spelled Piggot), who married William Watson.

I believe I have the right baptism for her - Charlotte daughter of William Pygot, bap April 6th 1763 at Conisbrough. She seems to have (at least) two siblings - William (bap 1756, Conisbrough) and Sarah (bap 1760, Conisbrough). I then found a marriage for William Piggot (senior) to Ann Boulton/Bolton on 13 Jul 1755 at Wadworth by Doncaster, which seemed to fit with the two burial records I have found for them - William buried 1802 at Conisbrough, and Ann buried 1817 at Conisbrough as widow of William.

Based on this burial record, William was 76 years old at death, which places his birth about 1726. And I've found a baptism record at Tickhill (St Mary) on 5 Sep 1725, but here (on the transcript, no image, on FindMyPast) it says that he is the son of William, and a woman called Sarah Jefferson, with a note saying that he was illegitimate - so how do I go about tracing his mother and father? I cannot find a marriage record for William and Sarah, so it seems like they may never have married. But I don't even know if Sarah was a widow at this point, a spinster or married to someone else.

Help and advice would be really appreciated with this.
Thank you,
Holly

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Trouble tracing the BURGON/BURGAN family of SILKSTONE
« on: Wednesday 01 February 17 17:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I'm having some real trouble tracing the Burgon/Burgan part of my family.

To start, I have Sarah Burgon, baptized 1713 at Silkstone, the daughter of Martha Burgon (it seems like Sarah may have been an illegitimate child).
Now, the only baptism in the area I could find for Martha was 7 Nov 1669 at Silkstone, the daughter of Hugh. This however would have made her 44 years old at the time of birth of Sarah, which is quite old despite being still possible.

So, if this baptism for Martha is correct, then she had at least 2 siblings - William (baptized 19 Jan 1667 at Silkstone), and Alice (bap 17 Mar 1671 at Silkstone). On Alice's baptism record, it gives the name of her mother - Elizabeth.
Despite this, I can't find a marriage at all for Hugh Burgon to an Elizabeth.

So then I tried to find out a bit more about Hugh to see if that would help me locate a marriage. I found what I think is his burial at Silkstone on 25th February 1699. This doesn't give an age though, so I don't know his birth year. I tried doing a general search for a baptism record for Hugh, and it doesn't seem like there are many Hugh Burgon's at all! The only one that appeared was in London, 12 Oct 1636, son of Hugh, but obviously London is very far away from Silkstone, and I have no way to prove that this is my Hugh.

Any help or advice with this would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks,
Holly

Cheshire / Charles SIDEBOTTOM, son of PETER and ELIZABETH
« on: Tuesday 24 January 17 18:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I'm having a problem locating a baptism for Charles Sidebottom. From his burial record, he was born about 1752, and according to his children's baptism records at Wentworth in Yorkshire, Charles's parents were Peter Sidebottom and his wife Elizabeth. Peter is said to be a cordwainer of Wheily? Whelley? in Cheshire (it's hard to read on the documents, and I don't know of many places in Cheshire - but one says it's near Stockport).

Despite this information, I can't seem to find any possible baptisms for Charles. I have been able to find two possible marriages of a Peter to an Elizabeth/Betty in Cheshire, but I don't know which would be the correct one.

Any help with this would be great - it's the first time my ancestry research has taken me to Cheshire.

Thank you,
Holly

Hello all,

While tracing my Parkin line, I found a very odd name transcribed on FindMyPast.
The name, which I'm pretty sure isn't correct is 'Leweiner Parkin'.
It is said to be this on the transcription, and does look like it says this on the census image.

It is the 1851 census for Charles Parkin (b.1816, Kimberworth) and his wife Sarah (b.1817, Kimberworth) and their children Emma, Aaron, Zilphah and 'Leweiner', living on Hesley Lane in Ecclesfield, Yorkshire.
Leweiner is said to be a female, daughter of Charles and Sarah, born in Ecclesfield in either 1851 or 1850 (as she is listed as 0 on the census).
However I cannot find a baptism record for her, nor is she on other censuses I have found of the family.

I've attached an image of the name as it appears on the census document.
Help finding out who this female was, and what her name was would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Holly

Hello all,

I'm hoping someone has knowledge of the Bradfield/Bolsterstone/Hollingbush area of Yorkshire.
I have a Ann MORTON, daughter of Alice Morton. This Ann married Thomas EASTWOOD at Wath Upon Dearne on 5th January 1779.

I went about trying to find a baptism record for Ann MORTON, with a mother named Alice. I've found a possible baptism record at Sheffield - 'Anne Mortin daughter of Alice Mortin' born at the Workhouse, baptized 27 Jul 1760 at 'Sheffield, St James, Norton' (record can be found on FindMyPast - I think it may be transcribed as Martin).
On Ann and Thomas Eastwood's children's baptisms at Wentworth, Alice (Ann's mother) is said to be of Bolsterstone, and again at Hollingbush, Bradfield.

I know that Alice may well have moved to live in a different area between the birth of Ann and the time that Ann had her children, but does anyone know if this Alice baptizing her daughter at Sheffield could be my Alice of Bolsterstone/Hollingbush? Were there any workhouses in this area? (the name of the workhouse mentioned on Ann's baptism isn't mentioned).
Also if anyone can find any alternative baptisms for Ann, then I would be very grateful.

Many thanks,
Holly

Added: I should mention that on the record image, the exact words are: "Anne d: [blank space left for father's name]   & Alice Mortin at the workhouse".
Is it likely that the father is deceased or that Ann(e) was illegitimate? Also, would there be any way of me tracing Alice - where she was from etc, or would it be looking for a needle in a haystack?

Hello all,

I would really appreciate some help finding out more about SUSANNA, who married John Hammerton at Rotherham on 29th November 1779. They had several children, all baptized at Greasbrough;
- Ann, bap 8 Dec 1780
- John, bap 19 Dec 1784
- Stephen, bap 5 Apr 1789
- William and Thomas, bap 5 Jun 1791
- Thomas, bap 29 Sep 1793
- Richard, bap 11 Feb 1797
- Elizabeth/Betty, bap 14 Jan 1798

On the marriage of Susanna to John Hammerton, Susanna's maiden name is said to be OXSPRING.

I found what I believe to be her burial record on FamilySearch (only the transcript), which suggested she was buried in 1831 in Greasbrough/Rotherham. The burial record also suggested a birth year of about 1758, but I can't seem to find any Susanna Oxspring's baptized. So that led me to believe she may have been married previously (so Oxspring wasn't her maiden name), but I haven't managed to find a possible marriage of Susanna to an Oxspring yet.

Help and advice would be greatly appreciated,
Holly

Lincolnshire / AIREY family, Lincolnshire - help much appreciated
« on: Thursday 12 January 17 23:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I would really appreciate some help with the AIREY line of my family - they're proving to be an interesting bunch!

Particularly, I would love help finding more about WILLIAM AIREY. He was my direct ancestor, and the father of GEORGE AIREY, another one of my ancestors.
I am struggling to find out about WILLIAM AIREY - I know that he married Elizabeth MAJOR at Wrawby in Lincolnshire 27th Feb 1753, William is said to be of Luddington Parish, and Elizabeth is of Redbourne. Together, William and Elizabeth had the following children; Catherine, Anne, John, William, George, Sarah, Mary and James, born between the years 1754 - 1769.

I would love to be able to find the baptism record for WILLIAM AIREY, as I'd like to trace further back along his line. Although, I am struggling to find anything on him. Apart from him being from the Luddington Parish, I can only guess at his approximate birth date, and I am yet to find his occupation either (although his son George was a fiddler).

Help and advice would be greatly appreciated,
Many thanks,
Holly

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Where is Coley Lane? Yorkshire, late 1700's
« on: Friday 14 October 16 21:17 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

Anyone who has knowledge of the local area, can access maps of the area online or knows which website I should be looking on would be a great help here!

I have a baptism of a Mary Carnelley at Wentworth in 1786. Her grandparents are said to be John Pepper and Mary. John Pepper is said to be a farmer of Coley Lane, but where is Coley Lane? I'm imagining that it's probably in the local area, but I don't know where to look to find it on an old map.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated as always,
Many thanks,
Holly
