Dorset Lookup Requests / George Jones, Osmington, Weymouth.
« on: Wednesday 09 February 11 23:33 GMT (UK)  »
I Know it's a bit much to ask but if anybody is in the area of Osmington, Weymouth, I could do with some info on George.
He was born to Samuel and Rachel Jones. IGI have the baptism 4th Jun 1826, father Samuel mother Rachel, but his naval records have him born 4th Jun 1827. George joined the Royal Navy on 28/3/1846 but I'm sure he left the area some time before then as father Samuel was a coastguard at Queenstown, Co. Cork in 1837, as such they're not on the 1841 census.
I've found two marriages for Samuel Jones to a Rachel, Edwards 7/3/1815 at Swansea and Powell 8/12/1814 at Brecon, but without Rachel's maiden name I'm stuck. It may be in the parish birth records of George or probably his siblings as he was born some time into the marriage. Samuel died in Cork on 12/10/1847 aged 69 so his birth was c1778. He may even have been a coastguard at Weymouth or Osmington.
I've looked online for Osmington births but it's of no help.

I do realise it is a lot to ask and understand if it's not possible.

Best Regards

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Gibson
« on: Sunday 17 January 10 12:22 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anybody could help me with a skeleton in the cupboard.
I am trying to find out about a child my grandmother had before she got married. Her name was Margaret Gibson and she was born 27/11/1890 at 9, Leycester St., Liverpool. She married my grandfather James Scott McClaughlin on 5/8/1910 at St. Anthonys Liverpool. She was aged 19 when wed and was living at 35, Wilbraham St. There were four boys born to them from 1912 all at that address.
The puzzle is that on the 1911 census Margaret was with her parents in 35 Wilbraham St. married under a year with one child living, the implication being that an illegitimate child was born before the marriage. There wasn't an earlier marriage. Strangely she is entered under the name Margaret Gibson and not Margaret McClaughlin, being daughter of parents Thomas and Mary Gibson.  It is also odd the child is not with her. James wasn't there as he was a merchant seaman.
I don't have a first name for this child, just a very likely surname of Gibson and the birth will have been at 35, Wilbraham St. about 1908-1910. Her family moved there from Leycester St. c1906. The volume will be 8b.
The family photographs of my father and his brothers as children do not include this missing child.
I live down south and getting to Liverpool is a problem so any help in solving my puzzle would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards

Jim McLaughlin.

Hi Everyone,
Please can you help me with ggrandfather. He has a tear on the left and his uniform is looking a bit tatty.
Have you any idea on his cap badge? He was in the Royal Navy from 1853 to 1876 and then the Coastguard from 1876 to 1892. I don't know where to look for cap badges, do you?

All the best

Hi,
Do you think you could erase the old sellotape on my ggran's photo. Any attempt at removal lifts the film from the paper. It's the only one I have of her so I don't want to damage it.

All the best

Jim
