Hi all this site has already been fantastic and helped me break down some brick walls which have stumped me for months and I was wondering if anyone could help me again

My Irish ancestry has been so incredibly hard to crack, finally thought I was making head way but now I've come stuck again and was just wondering if anyone could advise me as to what to try next to try and get my research going again? Thank you

My great-grandfather was Dennis Treacy born 1st February 1897 in Tyrrells pass Mullingar Westmeath (according to his birth record, his father was Martin Treacy and his mother was Catherine McCormack

I have found the family on the 1901 and 1911 Irish census but nothing before that, I believe I'm right in believing that there no surviving census records before that until 1851, Martin is 50 on the 1901 census so possible he could just had been born around the 1851 ones but with no info on parents I don't know what I'm looking for

If anyone could point in the direction on the best place to look for info which could get me progressing that would be great

Thank you

There's an Owen Callaghan in Cadder, Lanarkshire in 1901 with a daughter Margaret of the right age to be your Margaret. There is a corresponding birth registration in Cadder in 1899,which might be worth checking out.

I wouldn't put it beyond the bounds of possibility that the daughter got the year of birth wrong - I only know my mother's because I've seen her birth certificate  ;D

Ruth

Thank you so much :) I have just purchased more credits on scotlandspeople and looked at that record and yes father is Owen Callaghan and Margaret Callaghan born 1st December 1899 so looks like her daughter had the incorrect year now I can move forward in my research thank you :)

Molly/Mollie can be both a feminine given name and a pet-name for Mary or Margaret.

I saw that marriage certificate also and wondered if it was your Margaret

I had heard that about Molly being a variant of Margaret which is why I looked at it in the first place, and everything else matches so I'm leaning more and more to believing this is the correct marriage certificate :)

Have you tried for her marriage certificate to see who her father was
Rosie

I have been trying and trying to find her marriage certificate but as her husband was Irish finding records has been difficult, I have found one possible marriage certificate correct grooms name and around the right time frame the only thing that makes me doubt whether it is right is that it lists her name as Molly Callaghan not Margaret, but if it is correct her fathers name is Owen Callaghan

According to her death certificate she was born 1st December 1900 in Scotland
She died 13th July 1983 in Wandsworth

Who registered her death, was it a family member who was 100% sure of where she was born?

Her daughter registered her death so I would assume she would be sure but I suppose how much she accurately knew could be anyones guess

Hi Ruth

yes I had ruled them out as when I opened the files one was born in January and the other was born in July and according to Margaret's death certificate she was born on the 1st December

Hi all I discovered a branch of my family tree was Scottish and thanks to Scotlands people my research is coming along nicely.

Then when doing some research on a Irish branch of my family which I was already struggling with, I was told that my great grandmother died whilst staying over here in England, which made it alot easier for me to find her death certificate and the first information about her I had come across except for her name.

I was shocked that she wasn't born in Ireland like I had expected but she was born in Scotland but I am struggling to find any further information on her or her family to take my research any further and wondered if anyone could help?

Her name was Margaret Callaghan (or O'Callaghan according to my grandfathers baptism record)
She married my great grandfather Denis Tracey/Treacy (spelling differs)
According to her death certificate she was born 1st December 1900 in Scotland
She died 13th July 1983 in Wandsworth

For me would be absolutely anything to help with my Irish side, both my dad's parents are from Ireland and everytime I finally manage to break down a brick wall another harder one appears, was told tracing Irish ancestry was hard but quite hard just how difficult it would be
