Thanks for the Lewisham hint .. validated and censuses included in my tree including fanny from Yorkshire. That eliminates one James for me !

I am having the same problem. It started last night (April 28).
I contacted Family Tree Maker support and they said it was a problem with ancestry.

I am having the same problem. I just sent a diagnosis report to them but I have not heard back from them. If anyone gets an answer that works please post it here.

Oops, as of this morning, now I am having the same problem with my wife's family file. I was still able to follow the hints leaf on FTM late last night.

I hope everyone has contacted support (link is at the bottom of the page). Ancestry has confirmed receipt and assigned a case number, but so far no fix. When I get a reply, I will post it here. Meanwhile, everyone with the problem should report the problem so Ancestry realizes it is affecting more than one person. And thanks for all the replies letting me know I'm not the only one with the problem.

I have the same problem. It is ancestry's problem. I called and went through all of the steps, and still cannot merge.

If anyone else has FTM, please try this and, if it fails, raise a contact with Ancestry ... a few more complaining may get this cleared faster :-)

The mechanism for following a green leaf hint to Ancestry and comparing detail has broken in the last couple of days. I have reported it to the US and UK sites. Many people reporting in US as in this example....
Merge failure
When clicking on an ancestor hint "leaf", the page opens with possible resources for the person. However, one cannot select any hint to merge, and the merge box for the hint at the bottom right remains blank. The program operated normally until two days ago, now merge has failed.
I think it must be a web site change as I have not changed the program... probably Active Server Pages or equivalent.

I have now added the William/Elizabeth(Nunn) children to my tree for assistance in analysing the other James and hopefully to get some links to other trees.
Unfortunately the trees showing up are not good - Censuses with different birthplace, death in Utah ( the USans are really desperate to link to UK :-) )

I will look for an earlier birth.
I still have a login to SEAX for a few days and some more St Mary's is next.
I did look for late baps - I was even considering Barking baps about 10 years later for a birth at the 1823 date :-)
My James snr / Emireta Gardner is (currently!) younger brother to the William/Elizabeth (Nunn) you refer to - making my James junior a first cousin to their son James.
Your comment about Ancestry is valid. I joined it last year to add to my manually assembled information and have been surprised and very disappointed at the quality; I discovered that a lot of trees are based on the Millennium File alone! I am going through my tree validating and probably pruning - hence the search for the parents of James Gower who m Brand.
If you are interested in Gowers my tree is in GarethWilliams - my solid anchor is John W Gower b 1859.
Still hoping for a James Gower(s) baptism with dob ca 1823 in Maldon !

The attached is from the old Legh place at Lyme Park - a tile in the orangery,
The right (left as you look at it ) or male half of the shield is the description you gave ....
