Grateful if someone could lookup the Yorkshire Post & Leeds Intelligencer of 3 December 1872 for an article entitled "Stealing Wearing Apparel in Leeds"

Apparently an Ellen Walker was charged with stealing 2 coats from the shop of William Frederick Hirst, outfitter No 3 Kirkgate.

I would welcome further details of Ellen.  Was she using an alias and any further details in the article?  Are any family members mentioned?

New Zealand Completed Requests / Death of Ellen Walker & sons Samuel and Henry
« on: Tuesday 03 May 16 05:57 BST (UK)  »
Can anybody help as I have drawn a blank.  I am searching for the death of Ellen Walker and her sons Samuel and Henry.  The following is what I know.

From UK census information Ellen was born c 1823 in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, the daughter of William Spencely, Sawyer and Ellen Kendrick.

On 24 July 1842 she married William Walker, Sawyer the son of Samuel Walker, Mariner.  No further details known about Samuel or who his mother was.  Samuel was deceased at the time of William's marriage.

William and Ellen had the following children:
John Atkinson Walker born 1844
Harriet born 1846
William born c 1847
Ellen born 1850
Samuel born 1860
Henry born c 1862

William, Ellen, Samuel and Henry Walker sailed from Gravesend, London on 28 August 1877 on the "Iron Queen" and arrived in Auckland, New Zealand on 28 December 1877.

William appears on the Electoral Roll in 1881 as living in Helensville, occupation sawmaker.

William died on 29 July 1894 in Devonport, Auckland, New Zealand and is buried in O'Neills Point cemetery, Takapuna, Auckland.

The death notice indicates that he died at the home of his son (John Atkinson Walker).  There is no mention of a wife or children in the death notice.  The death certificate also makes no mention of a wife and children.  The headstone on his grave records his name and death details and those of John Atkinson Walker and John's wife Martha Elizabeth Walker.

I have checked the Dept of Internal Affairs death index from 1870 - 1925 for Ellen's death, using the age at time of death none appear to have been born c 1823/24.  I have also checked the death index from 1870 - 1945 for the deaths of Samuel and Henry  I have also check electoral rolls, Paperspast and Archway.

I have also been unable to locate and additional information on Samuel and Henry Walker except that Henry married Elizabeth Cole, daughter of Thomas Cole, Basketmaker and Emily McNamara on 27 August 1887 at St Pauls church, Auckland.  Henry's occupation was Sawyer.  Sadly Elizabeth died a few months later.

William, Ellen and the 2 youngest children followed the eldest John Atkinson Walker to NZ who arrived in NZ in August 1870.

John A Walker was the first Manager of the Te Kopuru sawmill in the Kaipara.  In January 1880 JA Walker took over the management of the Kaipara Hotel, Helensville.  In 1882 he was living at Jervois street, Ponsonby, Auckland.  In 1890 he was Manager of the Aratapu sawmill. In late 1891/early 1892 John and Martha holidayed in Australia for 1 month.  It appears that they also made other trips to Australia.  I do not know if any family were living there.

In 1892 he was living at Melrose, North Shore, Auckland.  In 1900 he was elected Councillor of the Devonport Borough Council.  From 1903 - 1905 he was a member of the Auckland Harbour Board.

JA Walker died on 12 July 1923 at Devonport and his wife Martha Elizabeth Walker nee Firth died on 3 September 1923.

Any suggestions welcome as to where I might find information on Ellen, Samuel and Henry.

« on: Sunday 01 May 16 05:33 BST (UK)  »
Ellen Walker was buried on 21 November 1885 at Alverthorpe, York, England.
Can anybody help with details from her headstone; ie date of death and reference to any other family members. Or index details to obtain death certificate.
Not sure whether the Free UK BMD index entry for Dec quarter 1885 is the correct one based on registration district.
Thanks
