I use both webbased family trees and a CAD paper version, which I update from time to time. The CAD drawing allows unlimited lateral and vertical extension, which I print out in A4 sheets as needed. It is completely scaleable and I can zoom in on an area that I am working on, or zoom out to see a more general relationship. On the greater tree I keep a red line through my direct ancestors so that I am not deluged by the lateral branches. Being graphic, I can drag and drop if modifications require more space. My drawing started as an Autocad project but since retirement I prefer a free to use (for non-business use) program called Projecad.

Canada Lookup Request / Re: Trewin family of Darlington/Clark Townships Ont.

Hi,

Thanks for the information. I am still a little frustrated that Ontario records of the period are so hit and miss. It was so easy ( well relatively) searching the earlier english parish records in Cornwall. I am also looking for his wife Mary (née Brimacombe) and her father John. It is good to know that the younger generation are buried together.

Thanks Slemon-BishopS
Fortunately the parish records in Cornwall, unlike most other counties, have been freely available for some years now. It was relatively easy to track down Joanna's marriage and other family member's movements around Cornwall through the census and parish records. The original family home, Newpark, is still there in Week Saint Mary. My wife and I have visited the current owners a couple of times. The house is in a beautiful country setting between the villages of Whitstone and Week Saint Mary. It is a shame that burial records were not maintained in Canada in the 19th century as the elder Thomas Trewin and his wife Mary seem to just disappear. I have even read through all of the local newspapers hoping for a mention.

Seems to have been a popular name. If you are going to Eglish the house is owned by a farmer and is in a state of ruin. The church is in slightly better shape. In 2011 the church and burial ground were apparently up for sale. As you enter the burial enclosure in the middle of the north wall, Dorothea's grave is in the left hand corner and Dorothy Winslow and children in the right hand corner. I am trying to obtain information on the former who died in 1825. Perhaps you can get a photo of the inscription.

Hi Maggsie,
Coincidentally both brothers married Dorotheas, and both are buried side by side in the Berry church at Eglish, the first having died in 1825 followed a year later by Dorothea (nee Winslow). See attached: https://sites.google.com/site/irishberrygenealogy/eglish-castle
I will pass your information on to Paddy Berry, the writer and host of the above family history site. He is a descendant of your Winslow Dorothea. I am a descendant of M. P. Berry and his second wife, Martha Turpin, but nobody seems to know the maiden name of the his first wife, Dorothea.

I have followed the advice of searching for marriage contracts, but so far no success. Thanks for all of your help.

Yes, Dorothea and Marlborough could have even been married in Portugal, but the probability is that she was either a family acquaintance or the sister of a fellow officer. She was buried in the family cemetery so I think there was no scandal involved. She was mentioned in a letter from his former commanding officer but just as "your dear wife". Not very helpful. I can confirm that they were Protestant COI. So the question is: are there marriage records of that period?

I have all of the records for the second Turpin. The other Marlborough Parsons Berry you mentioned was probably his nephew. My great-gt-gt-grandfather died in 1842.

Thanks Jomot, I have now seen the record in Phillimore's. You did mention an alternate version of the name of Catherina Hatterley. Where was this from? Must be the same person.

I am trying to find a marriage record and last name for my ancestor's first wife, Dorothea, who accompanied him during the Peninsular war until returning to Ireland in 1813.

Marlborough Parsons Berry was paymaster to the 3rd Regiment of Foot throughout most of the Napoleonic Wars and later held the post of Barrackmaster at Tullamore. Dorothea died on 9 Nov. 1825 and is buried at the family churchyard at Eglish Castle. in 1827 M.P. Berry remarried to Martha Turpin.
