Thank you for your replies.

How do I go about looking at the original entry for the marriage?

Any ideas how I can find out who Philip's parents were?

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Charles Hills (1818-1867) probably!
« on: Tuesday 14 June 16 17:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I believe that Charles was born about 1818 in Shoreditch and died around 1867. He was married to Amelia, also from the same area, probably born about 1819. I would be grateful if anyone could confirm these details and find out when they were married and who Amelia's parents were. They had 7 children together:

Charles Hills 1838–1886
Amelia Caroline Hills 1840–?
Richard Hills 1842–?
Caroline Hills 1844–?
Emma Hills 1846–?
Albert Thomas Hills 1849–?
John Hills 1851–1852

Hope that helps! Many thanks  :)

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Catherine Sarah Hills (1842–1888)
« on: Tuesday 14 June 16 16:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to discover the parents' names and maiden name of Catherine Sarah and to confirm her dates of birth/baptism/marriage and death. I would be grateful for any help  :)

This is what I know so far:

She was born about 1842 in Hackney or Middlesex and may have died in 1888, probably in the Shoreditch area.
She married Charles Hills (1838 - 1886), probably in Shoreditch.
They had 8 children born between 1863 and 1879:
Catherine Amelia Hills 1863–1953
Charles Hills 1865–?
Emma Hills 1867–?
Arthur Hills 1869–?
Joseph Hills 1870–?
Henry (Harry) Hills 1873–1950
Frederick Hills 1876–?
Albert Edward Hills 1879–1931

Thank you in anticipation  :D

Thank you, silligen. That would make sense if John was Mary's brother as he is 7 years older than her and they were both born in Rodmell, which is not too far from Arlington. It would also make Mary 37 when she had her last child, rather than 46+, which seems more likely. The only problem is that she would have been 22 when she married Philip and CB53 found that Mary was over 30 when she married....

Hi again,

As suggested by groom, I have just looked at the abstract of Philip's will, which mentioned his children. It confirmed that there was no Sarah, BUT there was an Ann! Are there any records for her birth or baptism?

On the bright side, one of the executors was a John Pace of Cuckfield of the same parish, which adds weight to Mary's surname being Pace and might help towards finding her birth date or parents (he might be her brother or father). The date I have of 1765 (for a Mary Page) does not agree with CB53's findings that she was aged over 30 at her marriage to Philip on 29 Oct 1785.

Thank you all so much for all your help and information. I've learnt more here in the last 2 days than on my own in the last 2 years! :)

Just checked all the censuses and on all of them Sarah Elizabeth's date of birth is 1796, so could the baptism in 1794 possibly be 1796 instead? Is a date of birth given for Ann?

Another mystery is that on the 1851 census, Richard and Sarah have a 5 year old granddaughter, Sarah Martha Elen living with them. Furthermore, she was born in Stepney, London, although all the rest of the family were born and lived in Sussex. The only children of Richard and Sarah old enough to be her parent are Richard William (otherwise appearing as William Richard), born 1821 and no longer living in the family home, Frederick (1825 - 1853) or Emily (1828 - 1862). Sarah Martha seems to live with her grandparents until marrying in 1867, so who could be her parents? Richard William married a Martha in 1845, so she could be their child, but surely she would live with them in that case. It would be rather coincidental that she always visited at census time!

Yes, that makes sense. I have Richard's brother John married to an Ann Ulman, born 1802, Lewes and I have Richard married to Sarah Elizabeth in 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses. In 1871, Sarah E. Elen and Ann Elen are living together and listed as sisters, so it looks like Ulman should be Illman!! The marriage in Brighton probably just omitted the name Sarah, as the dates fit Thank you for sorting that out :)

Thank you for looking. Have I got the right information for Philip and Mary's children? Some people on Ancestry have Sarah Elizabeth  (1796 - 1883) as their child, but I think it is more likely that she was the wife of Richard (1792  - 1871).
