So, birth entries bring up:

    LAMB, GEORGE  WILLIAM      TODD
GRO Reference: 1850  D Quarter in BURY SAINT EDMUNDS  Volume 13  Page 416

He isn't George William, he is George Thomas.

Likely another family group.

The 1851 census, just after George and Maria's marriage shows him as an innkeeper.

1861, George is showign as a fishmonger as you have.

Let me get the FS refs for you...

Monica

They got married in Camden if indeed it is the right person, I don't think Bury is right.

I don't know where to start so this might be confusing.
Maria Elizabeth Lamb M 1872 to James William Varley. Her marriage certificate says that her father is George Thomas Lamb and he is a fishmonger.

The 1861 census shows George Thomas as a fishmonger with 2 children Maria and George

I have checked the GRO and can find a 1850 birth for George Thomas Lamb, MMN Row and a Maria Elizabeth Lamb B1852 MMN Row.

I can find a baptism for Maria on 22nd Feb 1852 showing the father as a hawker

Other census' for George Thomas Lamb SNR only seem to list him as an Engineer and George Thomas JNR marriage certificate shows his father to be an Engineer.

I am confused as to am I looking at 2 different people here or the same one. I can't imagine that he went from a Hawker to an Engineer to a Fishmonger and back to an Engineer.

Can anyone help make sense of this please?

Sometimes siblings can migrate together -  Looks like there was at least one brother William John Varley born 1820 who was living with the parents in 1851 but I can't see anything for him in the USA or Canada.

Sandra

I have him on the 1861 & 1871 census so don't think he went abroad.

Do we know if there were any other relatives from either side of the families who immigrated to the USA or Canada   ?

Sandra

Not from what I can see so far.

Thank you, at least that makes sense - if there are no records, I can't find it.

In the meantime is there anyway to find out why he went New York?

James Varley B:1822, Letitia Varley B:1828 & James Varley B:1849 Went to New York and arrived 23rd August 1852 on the Northumberland, leaving from London.

They had a second child Arthur Albert B:1853 in St Pancras, Middlesex so they must have returned.

I cannot find the return journey, can anyone help?

Thank you
