The following children are baptized to John & Mary AYLWIN in Houghton:

John 1748
William 1750
George 1753
Mary 1756
Henry 1762
Hannah 1765
Thomas 1768

The following children are baptized to John & Ann AYLWIN in Houghton:

John 1773

The following children are baptized to John & Ann AYLING in Houghton:

Thomas 1775
William 1779

Houghton burial records for some of the above include the following:

Thomas Ayling 1824 age 56 (B. 1768)
Henry Ayling 1826 age 63 (B. 1763)
John Ayling 1827 age 79 (B. 1748)

I don't see any AYLWIN burials in the time frame of the above expected lifespans. Were these all supposed to be AYLING? Seems likely that John & Mary were the parents of John (Ann).

Thanks, I did see that previously. However, the last name is AYLWIN which is a distinct surname with many family lines in West Sussex--usually in the same parish as Ayling. It could be that the clerk wrote the last name down wrong in error. However, you can see Thomas in 1768 is AYLWIN as well. Then in 1775 you have a John and Ann AYLING having a son Thomas. Same couple?
I was hoping the transcriptions would help me tease it out rather than go through the originals. In other words, if I find mostly AYLINGs here (marriages and burials too) then I would be inclined to accept that AYLWIN here is in error.

The Aylwyn versus Aylynge names caused me a lot of grief early on in my researches. See for example, Stedham parish http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.ayling/158/mb.ashx. When parish records were directed to be transcribed from paper to parchment in the early 1600's that names were used interchangeably even within family groups. I had to go to Wills, BT and other sources to sort out the two.

Hi Mike. I was wondering if you worked this line back any farther?

I have done lots of work on the Ayling families of Hampshire and West Sussex. See http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.ayling/mb.ashx.

I have transcribed all Aylings in Hampshire parishes. I am working on West Sussex. I was going to order Houghton parish register transcriptions, but an ancestry.com search does not seem to come up with anything beyond John (1773-1848), and his birth date as you probably know seems to be derived from the 1841 census --so he might have come from elsewhere.

I do have a tree set up on ancestry.com called "Aylings of Houghton, Sussex Family Tree". I suspect you probably have all this already.

Just looking for links with families as I have working several other trees in the same general area. My folks are a little father to the west in Stedham/Woolbeding with lines that I have traced back to the early 1500's (thanks to many extant Wills). Please let me know. Thanks!

No Maria.

I've got the tree as far as two brother (I think they are brothers): Thomas Aylen born about 1770 and died in 1822 in Kelvedon. He married Sarah Allen. I fellow researcher apparently found a marriage for them in Braintree in 1790. However, the citation does not come up in ancestry.com searches. Thomas had many descendants down to the present.

His brother John born around 1771 according to 1841 census. He died in 1844 in Orsett. Married Elizabeth. Again he has many descendants down to the present.

The families use Ayling, Aylen and Aylin through different branches.

I guess I am hoping we cam link up somehow to your John & Judith. Thomas and John's families seem to be clustered around Chelmsford at the same time as yours.

Hardly an Essex docs are coming up in search engines for some unknown reason, so my researches have been limited. I am in Canada. I can invite you to the tree. I will send you a PM with my e-mail if you are interested.

Nothing stands out in Stedham (or Chithurst) for Knights that might link to the folks in Iping. Looking for a William Knight born somewhere around 1730. I note that there is a long line of Knights in Stedham, however. Probably a link there but nothing stands out in the parish records. I will keep this family name in mind while I do my Ayling researches and let you know if anything comes up. Cheers!

Lucy's 1831 baptism is captured via England, Pallot's Baptism Index, 1780-1837. The other children do not appear to have baptism records. However, hardly anything comes up for the Aylens of Essex in the ancestry.com search engines. Not sure why. I do have copies of originals obtained from the BRO... As noted above the tree captures all these folks with birth dates derived from census.

There is a William Knight listed as witness in many marriages starting in 1754-1775. Likely churchwarden. He and wife Elizabeth are witness to marriage of Elizabeth:

24/03/1761 B G COVER Charles S
B KNIGHT Elizabeth S
W KNIGHT Elizabeth
W KNIGHT William

I note:

30/05/1777 B G MOSELEY Henry S
B KNIGHT Ann S
W READ Isaac
W PARSON Thomas

and as above:

25/07/1785 B G AYLING William S
B KNIGHT Judith S
W RANDALL Hannah
W COLLINS William

I think it might be reasonable to guess given her age, and son's name, that Ann was the daughter of William & Elizabeth Knight.

William's burial:

31/05/1777 KNIGHT William

He was possibly the son of either William or Richard, but with no baptism recorded. I'll check Stedham as well.

Herts Completed Lookup Requests / Re: David AYLING - Baptism Record
« on: Monday 24 October 16 20:15 BST (UK)  »
And I am now wondering if the person above who saw the original baptism for David and thought he father's occupation was "trooper"....mis-read it for "turner". This is a trade that is consistent for David and James and perhaps other descendants. If so was there something that would have required travel as a "turner of wood vessels, bowls, etc to travel from Hertfordshire to Hampshire and back over generations?  But I think with son, James living in Hertfordshire, this strengthens the idea that father David was born in Hertfordshire to Jesse. I don't think this discounts Jesse originally coming from Hampshire. I'll keep chipping away.
