« on: Thursday 17 February 11 01:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Pdavison
sorry in taking so long in getting back to you.
I don't know if I can be of much help to you but this is what I have.

Hannah Sumerville married John Davison on the 16/05/1882 in the parish church of Segoe
John's father was Alexander Davison, Hannah's father was Pierce Somerville
witness's were Joseph Henry Davison and Margaret McKinney
Hannah and John went to Canada sometime in 1882 or 1883 as their first child Wellington Davison was b on the 31/05/1883 at Northwood Ontario Canada another 3 children were born in York County Ontario I am not sure where that is in relation to Northwood.
John and Hannah went to Cleveland Ohio in about 1895 as their youngest child was born there in 1896, John died 1940 and Hannah died in 1939 both in Cleveland
sorry I can't be of more help.

Hi Macca
Have been meaning to reply to your message for some time
I am researching the Somerville line but I may have some info of interest to you

Youngson Somerville married 12/07/1886 at Moira Methodist Church to Elizabeth Emmerson both were over the age of 21 a widower and widow Youngson's father Percy ( really Pierce ) and Elizabeth's father was Richard Gilpin both father's occupations said Weavers, witness's were William George Hawkins and Elizabeth Jane Aspital.

Youngson had 3 children that I know of to his first wife Elizabeth Dynes namely William b 1856 Stephen b 1863 and Elizabeth b 1867

Is there any indication when Thos. Emmerson and Elizabeth Dynes died?

I don't know when Thomas Emmerson died but Elizabeth Dynes must have died sometime between 1868 and 1886.

My grandmother filled in Eliz Somervilles death details, now I play the whatif game. Whatif she did marry at 22 (as stated on cert) and that was to Emmerson and then Somerville later. Maybe that was the only one my Granny knew about.

If somerville died in 1907 and She came to Australia in June 1908 that wud fit in. Don't know where Canade comes into the equation. Maybe a family furphey.

There still may be something in the Canada story as Youngson's eldest son William went to Canada and married there in 1885 to a Fanny Rankin, also Youngson had a elder brother called Sloan, Sloan had a daughter called Mary who married a John Tremaine in 1873 in Canada.
So Youngson may have went to Canada at sometime, but he must have returned to Ireland, Youngson's other two children namely Stephen and Elizabeth ended up in Australia, Stephen dying in Melbourne in 1943 and Elizabeth d 1904.
Hope this is of some help

Thanks kingskerwell and aghadowey for the leads you have provided me, the Jane Best in Bocombra looks very promising indeed.
aghadowey you are right about John Ritchey McCord being born 26/12/1876 my records show the same, don't know why I put 1878.
Once again thanks very much.

Armagh / Best and McCord families of Bocombra/Seagoe
« on: Tuesday 11 May 10 03:35 BST (UK)  »
Hello I am trying to find out some more info on my Best ancestors, I know very little of them, they seem to come from the Bocombra Seagoe Portadown area, there was a James Best born probably in the early 1800s his wife's name was Jane and they had 3 children that I know of ( I am sure there would have been others) namely Mary b about 1841 d about 1914, Anne Jane b 1849 d 1878 and Emma or Eliza.
Mary Best married John McCord on the 03/08/1875 in Portadown and they had 2 sons John Ritchie McCord b 1878 and Thomas David Best McCord b 18/03/1881 at Bocombra.
Anne Jane Best married a Joseph Somerville in 1875 at Portadown and went to New Zealand where she died in 1878.
I think James Best died in the 1850s and that his wife may have remarried to a man called Thomas Hall.
Thany you

The Common Room / How old did you have to be to be considered a man in the 1490s
« on: Monday 08 March 10 02:43 GMT (UK)  »
This is a two pronged question, I had an ancestor called Sir Richard Ratcliffe who fought in the Battle of Bosworth ( I think Aug 1483 ) unfortunately for Sir Richard  he was on the wrong side and he also killed.
He was promptly Attainted, I assume this means his land and titles etc foreited to the crown and that his family also lost their rights to the land.
Sir Richard had a son called Richard who had the Attainter removed some ten years later, but I think this Richard would have still been quite young maybe only 16 to 18 he may have even been younger , or could some one else have had the attainter removed on his behalf?
sorry about the long windness of the question.
Thanks Dav

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Latin doc from 1530
« on: Monday 08 March 10 02:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Chris and Pinot
Thanks very much for your replies.
I must admit I was reasonably sure that Quadraginta mean't forty, but I don't know any Latin except what I find in my little book of simple Latin,
Also Chris after re reading the document I think Mandia is written as manlia not Mandia as I first thought, does this make any difference or just confuse the issue more?
once again thanks very much

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Latin doc from 1530
« on: Friday 05 March 10 06:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hello  I was wondering if anybody could translate the following bit of Latin it is from quite a long document written about 1530 and it has lots of abbreviations but I don't know how to put the lines in above abbreviated words.
I think someone is 40 years old or more but I don't know who.
Thanks

Hi Chris in 1066
Thanks again for the information you have sent on Jeremiah Hider, there seems to be quite a bit of information in those indexes.
I am wondering if it would be worthwhile in trying to obtain copies of the original documents from the West Sussex Record Office or do you think the info on the indexes is as good as it gets.
once again thanks very much for the info.
