Thank you so much sandy that's really helpful! This side of the family has been a complete nightmare! We couldn't find my grandad for years didn't even think of him being born out of wedlock! My dad seems to remember stories of him joining a travelling circus so trying to establish what happened to his parents to see if that sheds any light! Thanks again for your help

Hi I don't suppose anyone has any suggestions on finding out about my great grandparents death they both died in 1919, Joseph whiley and Mary whiley (was going) one in September and one in December? We are trying to find out how they died and what happened to their children, Charles and Albert as they were both quite young? Any help would be gratefully received!

Midlothian / Re: Hay/Ledgerwood confusion?!

We weren't sure on Jean whether she was related or just a very good friend of abbies they moved to America together and my mum went to stay with them in the 60s all the confusion has started with Robert! Apparently because of the porkies he told he was the youngest person in the Gordon highlanders to receive a pension at the age of 32!

Midlothian / Hay/Ledgerwood confusion?!
« on: Monday 06 March 17 12:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi I don't know if anybody can help? We seem to have hit a bit of a family mystery, I am trying to trace the birth of my great grandfather, Robert "ledgerwood". He was born in Midlothian, edingburgh I think abt 1893. The problem is I don't think he was born as ledgerwood but changed his name to this to flee his parents and join the Gordon Highlanders?! He went by ledgerwood since he joined our family and married Annie Harriss in Dec 1920. As far as we know his fathers surname was Hay and his mothers first name Jane and they also had Abigail ledgerwood Hay. So not sure if he stole the name from there or if his mothers maiden name was ledgerwood or generations back? Any help would be gratefully received many thanks!
