Renfrewshire / Cameron Family
« on: Friday 11 August 17 15:53 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the children of Hugh Cameron and Agnes Sutherland, there was eight of them and I've only been able to fully trace one of them. They are as follows:

. Katherine Cameron b. 13 Feb 1821
. Elizabeth Cameron b. 23rd Feb 1823
. Duncan Cameron b. 8th April 1825
. George Cameron b. 11th Jul 1827
. Donald Cameron b. 29th April 1830
. Margaret Cameron b. 7th August 1832, m. Daniel Bell 6th Aug 1858 and had seven children, d. 16th May 1911. Stayed in Renfrewshire all her life but did live in Paisley.
. Agnes Cameron b. 4th April 1835
. Hugh Cameron b. 16th April 1841

All of them were born in Renfrew, Renfrewshire

There was a possible 1851 Scottish Census Record showing a Hugh and Agnes Cameron living with four of their children - Katherine, Margaret, Agnes and Hugh - in 10 Brick Lane, Paisley Abbey, Renfrewshire. Hugh Snr's occupation is given as a boatman. I do question this because Catherine is three years younger than she should be and Hugh Jnr is a year older than he should be. However I do realise that sometimes the census records are not always accurate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

United States of America / Sarah Cowan and Robert McGaffin
« on: Friday 04 August 17 13:02 BST (UK)  »
I have been trying to find a marriage record for Sarah Cowan (b. about 1848 parents John Cowan and Elizabeth McKnight) and Robert McGaffin (b. 19th May 1850 parents James & Matilda McGaffin). Both are from County Down, Ireland. The story is that they went to the United States to get married and then returned to Ireland. Their eldest son James Renwick McGaffin was born on 21st April 1878 so I assume they were married before that or in the same year. Can anyone help?

United States of America / Hugh McGaffin
« on: Sunday 30 July 17 12:26 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find a Hugh McGaffin who was born about 1830 in Ireland and moved to New York. He is listed on the 1870 United States Census living in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, New York with wife Cornelia along with two daughters Ellen (born in New York about 1866) and Bridget (born in New York about 1864). There is another woman living with them called Emily Timmons aged 28 who is also from Ireland. Hugh's occupation is listed as a Shoemaker. When I tried looking for them in the 1880 US Census nothing was coming up and the same can be said with regards to birth records for Ellen and Bridget. I'm still unsure as to whether Hugh moved back to Ireland or remained in the United States. Can anyone help?

Antrim / Mary Lucinda Sweeney
« on: Thursday 18 May 17 16:44 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find a birth record for a Mary Lucinda Sweeney born about 1875 in Belfast to Joseph Sweeney, a riveter then later a boilermaker, (sometimes spelt Sweeny or Swenny) and Esther Cowan. Her parents married on 29th March 1875 in Belfast. She married Robert Dickson, a seaman, on 8th September 1897 in Belfast and they had three children James (15th July 1899), Joseph (20 August 1901) and Mary Lucinda (31 December 1903 - 26th June 1905). Mary Lucinda's residence was given as 16 Earl Street on the marriage certificate. The family are living at 51 Dagmar Street Belfast in 1911 but as to their whereabouts in 1901 I do not know.

Fife / Malcolm Leitch/Leech
« on: Saturday 25 March 17 16:30 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find a birth record for a Malcolm Leitch/Leech born about 1794. There is a suggestion that his parents are Peter Leitch/Leech and Janet Turnbull. So far I have found 6 children born to Peter and Janet which include:

Margaret b. 1785 in Burntisland, Fife
Elizabeth b. 14/12/1781 in Dunfermline, Fife (same area where parents married 27/01/1781)
Janet b. 26/03/1795 in Burntisland, Fife
Peter b. 31/12/1790 in Burntisland, Fife
Rachel b. 06/08/1797 in Burntisland, Fife
Barbara b. 16/12/1782 in Burntisland, Fife

There is a possibility of another son called William born in 1783 but so far I have not found anything to suggest such a thing. I found some of the children as a result of the mother's maiden name being spelt incorrectly. The father was born in Kinross, Kinross-shire in 1757 and the mother in Inverkeithing, Fife in 1756.

Antrim / Lucinda Cowan
« on: Wednesday 21 December 16 15:32 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for information that could provide me with a maiden name for a Lucinda Cowan, wife of Thomas Cowan. They had at least two children Esther (b. about 1853, d. 31/12/1926) and Mary Jane (b. about 1852, d. 13/11/1900). Lucinda Cowan died on 18th March 1885 in Belfast with her last place of residence being 16 Earl Street. She is buried in grave D 416 along with her brother-in-law David Cowan (also living at 16 Earl Street), daughter Mary Jane, son-in-law John Ferris and two great-grand children Joseph and Jane Sweeney. Lucinda Cowan's death certificate states that her husband Thomas was deceased and I know that he was alive in 1875 when daughter Esther married Joseph Sweeney on the 29th March.

The 1901 and 1911 census state that Esther was born in Belfast but the death certificate of her daughter Agnes (Lucinda Cowan's granddaughter) states that her mother was born in Scotland. I have not found any evidence to suggest that this is the case.

Derry (Londonderry) / Mulberry Family
« on: Saturday 26 November 16 16:05 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find either a marriage or death record for the children of Robert Mulberry (b. 1840) and Matilda Mary Donaghy:

Margaret Jane Mulberry b. 8th October 1864 in Eglinton, Londonderry
Isaac Mulberry b. 20 April 1866 in Eglinton, Londonderry
Matilda Mulberry b. 13th May 1868 in Glendermot, Londonderry
William James Mulberry b. 25th April 1870 in Glendermot, Londonderry
Robert Mulberry b. 10 July 1873 in Londonderry, Londonderry
David Alexander Mulberry b. 3rd December 1875 in Londonderry, Londonderry

There has been a suggestion of a Catherine Mulberry born about 1878 and a John Mulberry born about 1883 but so far I have found no evidence that they exist.

There is a possible death for Isaac Mulberry in 1911 and for Robert Mulberry in 1938 but again I cannot find any records. It is possible that they might have started using the surname Mowbray but so far I have not found anything.

Armed Forces / Irish Guards Service Record
« on: Wednesday 02 November 16 15:08 GMT (UK)  »
My great-grandfather Isaac Mowbray spent 12 years with the Irish Guards and I was wondering if there was any way of finding a service record. I am unsure as to exactly when he joined up but as he was born on 5th November 1905, I am assuming he might have joined up approximately late 1920s. I am told that his younger brother William John (born 1st April 1907) also served with the Irish Guards at about the same time but I cannot find anything for him either.

Derry (Londonderry) / Annie Bonner
« on: Friday 23 September 16 18:29 BST (UK)  »
Annie Bonner was born 1906 in Linlithgow, Scotland to Hugh Bonner and Sarah "Sally" Boyle. After Hugh died of pneumonia in 1912, she and her mother moved back to Donegal (Sarah married Patrick "Paddy" McGarvey) . She died 29 September 1929, according to the grave stone in Annagry. I have been told that she was killed in a car accident in Newbuildings, Londonderry but I cannot find a death record that would confirm this for me. I have even looked through newspaper archives to see if anything would come up but so far I have found nothing.
