Down / Joseph McGaffin Grave
« on: Thursday 15 March 18 19:34 GMT (UK)  »
I have a Joseph McGaffin who was born on 14th August 1847 to James McGaffin and Matilda McGaffin in Newry and died 16th June 1893 in Sheeptown. He married a Jane Bradford on 20th August 1879 in Newry (Methodist Church). I was wondering would there be a certain cemetery he would be buried in. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

United States of America / Marriage Record
« on: Monday 26 February 18 14:24 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find a marriage record for a Joseph McGaffin and Isabella Fearon. Joseph left Ireland for Canada in 1906 and eventually arrived in the United States that same year. His daughter Isabella was born on 8th January 1907 in Newry under the surname Fearon and not McGaffin, his name was written on the birth certificate then it was crossed out. Three months later in April 1907 Isabella Snr is travelling to the United States from Londonderry under the surname McGaffin but there is no sign of the daughter. A son George W McGaffin was born on 23rd April 1909 in the United States so I think they might have got married between 1907-1909.

Any information would be greatly appreciated

Antrim / Hannah Doherty
« on: Saturday 06 January 18 17:31 GMT (UK)  »
Mansergh George Doherty (1853-1911, died in Belfast) married a Hannah Cathcart on 1st August 1868, marriage was registered in Strabane. They had seven children. On both census records (for Belfast) Mansergh says that he is married even though Hannah is not there. His death certificate was corrected from widower to married. Any information that would allow me to find Hannah would be greatly appreciated.

Derry (Londonderry) / Baird Grave
« on: Tuesday 05 December 17 16:45 GMT (UK)  »
I am searching for the grave of a Letitia Baird (maiden name Mowbray). She was born on 30/01/1903, under the surname of Mulberry, in Killymallaght to David Mulberry and Letitia Townsley. On 26/12/1934 she married William Baird, marriage was registered in Strabane. They had two children. I was told that she died when her children were young so I was thinking around the 1940s/1950s. I know she died before William because he married a Mary Mowbray (maiden name Simpson). Mary had been married to Letitia's uncle Jacob Mulberry. Letitia was Church of Ireland before becoming a Presbyterian. I was told that she did live in Drumahoe with her husband and children.

Antrim / William McNamee Death
« on: Sunday 03 December 17 17:34 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find the death record for a William McNamee, Clerk. He did marry an Ellen Foley and had two children John b. 16th April 1865 in County Antrim and Lizzie (b. 1858 out of wedlock, married James Lynn in 1879). John married Mary King on 15/05/1889 in Belfast and William is not listed as being deceased. His place of residence is given as 21 Lepper Street. Ellen died on 13th December 1896 aged 57 with the last place of residence given as 7 Lepper Street. She is listed as being a widow. She is buried in Belfast City Cemetery and no grave section or number is given but instead it is listed as 'public ground'. No one else is buried with her.

World War One / Soldier in Royal Garrison Artillery
« on: Wednesday 18 October 17 20:25 BST (UK)  »
I am seeking information relating to a Hugh John McGaffin, born 15th April 1881 in County Down, who served in the Royal Garrison Artillery with the rank of Bdr, which I think means Bombardier, regimental number 277198. There was also something else listed on the medal role SR/2198.

Any information would be greatly appreciated

Ireland / Honorary Law Degree
« on: Saturday 14 October 17 15:50 BST (UK)  »
I am looking into how a Dr James McKnight LL.D (1801-1876), journalist and tenant right campaigner, obtained his honorary law degree. There is a quote from The Irish Times in 1976 saying that "he received the LL.D from Aberdeen", now whether that refers to the Earl of Aberdeen or the University of Aberdeen I am not quite sure. I know he was using LL.D after his name in 1853 due to a court circular from The Times which talked about his meeting with the Home Secretary Viscount Palmerston.

Any ideas?

Derry (Londonderry) / Dr James McKnight Grave
« on: Friday 06 October 17 15:06 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the grave of a Dr James McKnight LL.D who died 8th June 1876 aged 75 in Londonderry. Dr McKnight was originally from Rathfriland, County Down before moving to Belfast and eventually Londonderry where he edited the Belfast Newsletter, The Banner of Ulster and The Londonderry Standard. He also played a key role in land reform for Ulster tenants. In 1846 he married Catherine McPhearson but there was no children from the marriage. He had three sister Agnes (married name Keane), Hannah (married name Martin) and Elizabeth (married name Cowan). I know he predeceased his wife because she is mentioned as the main beneficiary in his will.

I am assuming that because he died in Londonderry then it is most likely to be his place of burial.
