Radnorshire / Powys Archives Documents

FAO the Moderator, could you put this in the Resouces page?
The file contains bundles of useful information on Wills, Land Transactions etc etc submitted to the Powys Archives by various solicitors, covering 17c to recent times. Very worthwhile as a reference source.

I think he could well have been her 5th child. Looks like she had at least two grandchildren older than her last child!
Thanks for all your help.

David

This is my mother’s direct line, John (1838) was her grandfather.
I have the siblings: Eliza, James and George (father of George Herbert we have been talking about) but I didn’t know about Thomas. He didn’t appear with Margaret’s parents David & Elizabeth Lewis or later with Margaret at Birtley, so he warrants more research – where did you find him?

The Thomas Roberts witness to John and Sarah’s marriage is I assume his step father, Margaret’s husband, who she married a year earlier in 1858.
I don’t think the other children are connected to my Margaret. I would have expected William and Jane to have appeared in her father’s household with the others and Henry’s birth clashes with Charles Roberts (1858), Margaret’s first child by Thomas Roberts.

Yes that does seem to suggest that George Lewis married twice. Thanks for finding his first marriage and the burial of Emily Matthews.  The only issue I have is that I believe George was the 4th illegitimate child of Margaret Lewis (later Roberts) the daughter of David and Elizabeth Lewis of Middlehope Diddlebury, Shropshire. She didn’t marry until well into her 30’s and then wed Thomas Roberts a widower in 1858. Her parents despaired of her, especially as they ended up looking after her four children!

George Herbert Lewis born 10th April 1877 at Fieldhouse, Clent. His father is George Lewis a Coachman and his mother is Emily Lewis formerly Matthews. He is Baptised at Clent on January 27th 1878. He next appears in the 1881 census aged 3 in the household of Thomas Roberts at Birtley in Hatton, Church Stretton, he is grandson of Margaret (nee Lewis), I think he was here because his mother had died.
1881 Census for Belbroughton Worcs (nr Clent) there is a George Lewis (30) born Berkley, Shropshire (no Berkley in Salop so I assume Birtley) he is a horse breaker and living in the household of William Mountford, a Boot & Shoe maker, he’s married to William’s daughter Emily and they have an infant daughter (Lewis) aged 1 month (later Lizzie).
What I am trying to establish is did George Lewis marry Emily Matthews before Emily Mountford (he married the 2nd Emily on 7/3/1880).

At least now you know who her mother was: Elizabeth Jones of Bowdler born c1770. Back then in Shropshire (and perhaps elsewhere) daughters often took the maiden name of their mother after their father died, hence she calls herself Jones not Butcher!

I have a couple of Corfields in my tree. Your two are listed (line 25) page 17 in the Corfield family tree, the .pdf version http://corfield.port5.com/ However it does not give any further info about her.
Best of luck
