Derbyshire Completed Look ups / Death in Germany
« on: Sunday 23 July 17 20:38 BST (UK)  »
Hope this request is in the right place but it's a bit unusual.  The date is around 1920 , the place is Germany.  My ancestor married a non-commissioned officer in the Second, later Thirteenth, Brigade of the Royal Welch Fusiliers. Reg't No. 9358.  She moved with her husband to Germany, sometime after the end of WW I when his unit was posted to join the Allied Occupation Forces.  She died, aged around thirty five, in Germany, from a heart attack.  The soldier was Dai Roberts MORGAN, his wife, was Anne.  How on earth do I begin trying trace her?  At the moment, the last I know of Dai Roberts, from his Medal Card, is that he was a Lieutenant in Jan. 1920 and appears to have been awarded a DCM and a MM.  The last of Anne is the 1911 Census when she is twenty six, single and an assistant teacher living in Brownhills, Walsall.  Any help greatly appreciated.

Derbyshire / Samuel Gregory jnr
« on: Monday 20 February 17 17:46 GMT (UK)  »
Please bear with me, there is a question:

24 Jan. 1848 Samuel Gregory snr. married Ellen Skidmore at Earl Sterndale Church
?? ??   1852 Samuel Gregory jnr. is born  (Derived from two National Census entries)
21 Sep. 1855 Ellen dies.  "Inflammation of the lungs & Debility"  (Death Certificate obtained)
23 Sep. 1855 Ellen interred in Earl Sterndale churchyard
3  Dec.  1856 Samuel Gregory snr. marries Martha Belfield at Ashbourne
?? Sep. 1857  Martha gives birth to the first of seven children born over the next 13 years.
Samuel Gregory jnr appears in the 1861 and 1871 Census Returns (In 1871 he is a 19 years old Apprentice Carpenter; his father's calling).  After the 1871 Census entry I can find no trace of him or reference to him in any records. Neither Civil Registration nor Church Records or Emigration or Criminal.

Is it possible for someone's birth and death to not be recorded in the Civil Registers (BTW Martha's children were registered)?

Family History Beginners Board / Launderns

Good Evening Everyone
In an estimate for some painting work to a Chapel my Great Grandfather says he will paint the "launderns". He appears to be referring to something associated with the window frames.  Does anyone know what launderns are?

Family History Beginners Board / Family lore
« on: Tuesday 24 January 17 11:32 GMT (UK)  »
I hope I can draw on the experience of members about the weight they give to family lore.  My experience to date is that (usually) they contain a grain of truth but, I'm surprised when the full picture is revealed.  However, in the Lancashire section I've been trying to locate the burial place of my GGGrandfather, who, family lore says, died in the workhouse.  I recalled that in earlier work I'd found a burial for a man in the early 1830s of the right sort of age (mid-thirties), right area but, several others of the same name in the area.   I dismissed the record because the buried man died of Cholera, (an epidemic had just starting to grip the U.K.) because I was looking for a cause of death that might involve the Workhouse.

Would a Cholera victim have been put in the Workhouse, or should I treat the Workhouse story with suspicion and follow down every likely looking record?  What would other members do in this situation?

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Nancy Ann Mellor, Dukinfield.
« on: Saturday 21 January 17 18:23 GMT (UK)  »
Can a kind member please try to find for me the burial place of Nancy Ann Mellor, Oxford Road, Dukinfield because I'm completely stumped.  Nancy Ann died at home on 9 March 1839.  She was 14 years of age and died as a result of Dropsy.  The family lived in Dukinfield but they used St. Michaels Church in Ashton under Lyne.

Thanks in advance - Alex

My question is very similar to one by Jan Ann in July '14 which didn't get any replies.   Does anyone know if the Bakewell (specifically Great Longstone and Youlgreave) area of Derbyshire are within the diocese of Lichfield, Staffordshire?  If not, I presume the alternative is York?

Many thanks  Alex

The Lighter Side / Jack Robinson

Can anyone give a source for the expression   " ....before you could say Jack Robinson ..." ?  Meaning, something or other had occurred unexpectedly quickly.
Best Wishes - Alex

Family History Beginners Board / Tracing a photograph
« on: Wednesday 28 December 16 16:35 GMT (UK)  »
Many years ago I read a short (magazine I think) article that contained a photograph of my ancestors. It showed, three or four generations of the Gregory family outside their smithy at Crowdecote, Derbyshire.  Two men in the centre has just stopped work, not sure is one has a sledgehammer in his hand, a lady holding a babe in arms to the right side of the photo and, I think, one more character on the left.  In the background a jumble of blacksmiths detritus.

My question is:  How would members suggest I try to obtain a copy of this photograph for my records.

Many thanks - Alex
