I have been searching for any info regarding a Henry Johns who was in Aldershot
1900-1913.
Henry was employed in Aldershot, as the 1901 census tells me, as a bootmaker. He said he was born in Soho London and gave his age as 50 years, so by my reckoning he was born 1851.
The 1911 census states that he was still 50 years old and was born in St Anns, Soho, London. He states he had been married to Ellen Johns for a year (which was untrue as he did not marry her) and they had a daughter Amelia b.1911 ( who is my mother. Therefore as you can see Henry was my grandfather.) They lived in a room at 69 Perowne Street, Aldershot.
There was a second daughter Doris who was born 1913 and died 1914, Sometime after this date Henry dissapears as Ellens reverts back to her original married name of Weedon
and marries a George Sotheran in 1918.
I can find no trace whatsoever of Henry before 1901 nor after 1914.
I was wondering , and this is a long shot, if the Aldershot news of that time i.e. 1913 or just after, gave any mention of him or his family. I have learnt that Aldershot libary has back copies on microfilm.
I know Aldershot was and is a garrison town but I feel Henry was to old to join the army for the 1914-1918 war.
I wondered whether you visited the libary at anytime.
Any help would be very much appreciated,
Dud.
