The Common Room / Another pair of eyes.
« on: Friday 27 February 15 20:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All.
The 1891 census gives the details of a family living in St Anns, Strand, London (RG/12/88).They were Henry Johns   .  Head   M   33     Shopkeeper.      b.channel islands.
        Jane   Johns      Wife    M    32                            b.London, Bromley
Henry Johns      Son           4                              b. Westminster London

His mother and a  niece were also at the same address  (32 Frith Street, Soho).
My problem is that I have searched high and low for this family on the 1901 census but find no trace. There is a Henry aged 14 on the 1901 census as being born in Soho and whose parents are George and Janet Johns but I have found that this is not the Henry I require.  There is also a Henry Johns aged 50 living in Aldershot, in 1901, married to Ellen (but I know this is untrue) stating he is from Soho London.  This may be him but if so where is Jane and little Henry.  I have checked passenger lists, death records and juggled the names in al sorts of ways but to no avail.
Is it staring at me but I cannot see it??
Many thanks for any help
Dud.

Technical Help / Chrome based computer
« on: Saturday 03 January 15 17:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi.
I am a bit thick ( no.. very thick) when it comes to computers.
I am thinking of getting a chrome based desk top. I am aware that there is no cd/dvd player.
Is there anyway I can attach a cd/dvd player and burn cd's to a MP4 player?  Also I cannot find a chrome app that allows one to download music to a mp3/4 player. Does this make sense or am I talking rubbish. ( The model I am considering is a LG 22CV241-B)
 Honest replies please.

Dorset Lookup Requests / Parish Records Winterborne Houghton
« on: Tuesday 26 August 14 14:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi.
Nanny Jan kindly found the possible parents of my  Henry Jacob b.1699 as being Edward Jacob and Elizabeth of Winterborne Houghton.  I have found Henrys siblings,Mary, William, Edward and John all born 1693 - 1700 in Winterborne Houghton.  I cannot find the marriage of Henry and Elizabeth which I estimate to be about 1690. Perhaps I cannot see the wood for the trees. Another pair of eyes would be appreciated.
Very many thanks.

World War Two / POW records.
« on: Thursday 14 August 14 20:12 BST (UK)  »
I had an uncle whom I was told was a POW during WW11.  I was only 9 years old when the war
ended but can recall my mother folding and sending the local newspaper to him each week
His name was Philip Mark Jacobs b.1917 and his home address was Camberley Surrey.
I also recall that he was blind in one eye and served in the pioneer corps.I believe.
Can anybody find this man listed as a POW or did I get things mixed up as a child.
Many thanks.  Dud

Dorset Lookup Requests / Dorset parish record. Horton and Woodlands.
« on: Friday 01 August 14 11:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi.
I have the marriage of Henry Jacob and Ann Lawrence that took place in Horton in 1720.  The marriage entry shows Henry as being from Horton and Ann from Woodlands.  I can find Ann as being born in Horton/ Woodlands in 1696 but cannot find any details regarding Henry. I guess he was born about 1696, the same time as Ann.
Can anybody help?.  Many thanks
