Technical Help / Re: Espacenet inventor search.
« on: Monday 31 January 22 14:23 GMT (UK)  »
I've not seen Espacenet before, and on a brief foray couldn't find anything relevant for you, for example with this search

https://worldwide.espacenet.com/patent/search?q=ia%20all%20%22William%20Wilkinson%22%20AND%20pd%20within%20%221900%2C1940%22%20AND%20ftxt%20any%20%22firing%20aircraft%22

If you open this search page, and then turn on the 'Advanced Search" at the top, you see a more graphical representation of the search, which can be tweaked

However, once I had a search up and running, I found the pocket guide useful for working out ways to tweak the search
https://documents.epo.org/projects/babylon/eponet.nsf/0/8C12F50E07515DBEC12581B00050BFDA/$File/espacenet-pocket-guide_en.pdf

So for example, the above search appears in the search bar as:
ia all "William Wilkinson" AND pd within "1900,1940" AND ftxt any "firing aircraft"

and I think can be explained as:
ia (Inventors or applicants, with)
all (words in any order in)
"William Wilkinson"
AND
pd (publication date)
within
"1900,1940" (i.e. between 1Jan1900 and 31Dec1940)
AND
ftxt (any text field, with)
any (words from)
"firing aircraft"

Not sure if it's easier to adjust the search bar or the graphical search option.

Technical Help / Re: Microsoft Publisher
« on: Saturday 29 January 22 22:10 GMT (UK)  »
I have Microsoft 365. It will save in "Publisher 98", "Publisher 2000", and "Publisher", so it presumably opens these formats.

You could try a trial version of Microsoft Office before purchasing to check your files, or use one of the alternatives that Gadget has indicated.

Technical Help / Re: Dropbox problem
« on: Sunday 23 January 22 17:58 GMT (UK)  »

So I'm not a dropbox expert, and I hesitated to say anything, in case it may cause the loss of files, but here are some thoughts...

Possibly you have installed the dropbox desktop app and inadvertently allowed it to "keep your PC backed up", i.e. it's uploading and syncing all your files from your Desktop, Documents and Downloads folders.

In which case - I think you are wise to tread carefully, and making (another) backup may not be a bad idea, just so you'll know you won't lose anything. At the very least test, before doing anything drastic.

If you wish to keep the app on your PC, you may be able to stop backups, or change which folders get synced through the app preferences, which are tricky to find - instructions here:

https://help.dropbox.com/installs-integrations/desktop/view-preferences

If you don't want the app, you may be able to uninstall it through windows "apps and features".  You can continue to use dropbox, and add/remove files and folders through your web browser, by logging into dropbox.com (and dragging files/folders to that window).

I don't think removing the app will remove the files/folders that have already uploaded - and I don't think it will remove the files/folders on your PC - BUT I don't really know

Once you are no longer syncing (or don't have an app syncing) the files, then I think you can safely remove the files online via dropbox.com - but this is the bit I would want to test/back-up first.

Good luck! I have my fingers crossed for you.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Welsh residence help please, 1862
« on: Saturday 22 January 22 17:14 GMT (UK)  »

Wonderful, many thanks everyone.

I spent ages looking at Gazetteers, but wasn't making any progress, and wasn't as sharp-eyed when looking at old maps.

I hadn't come across the RCAHMW's list of historic place names before either - that looks like it will be very useful in the future.

Many thanks again everyone

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Welsh residence help please, 1862
« on: Friday 21 January 22 22:11 GMT (UK)  »
I have a Parish Record for the marriage between Robert Roberts and Catherine Roberts, 22 Mar 1862.

The Marriage is in Llanfwrog, Denbighshire, Wales and the bride I think resides in Ty Brith.  I'm struggling to decipher the Groom's residence (see attached).

Any help much appreciated

The Common Room / Re: Using Family Historian......Some advice please
« on: Friday 21 January 22 20:11 GMT (UK)  »
For better or for worse, I think gedcom is the standard genealogy database.  Even if programs interpret gedcom differently, it is at least a text file, which I'm hopeful is a format with some longevity.

You may be right to consider paper and perminant ink as a back-up though!

I understand Family Historian keeps the order of children as they are entered, irrespective of dates entered, unless they are explicitely re-ordered by the user.  But Guy's right, there's no guarantee another program won't re-organise them when importing.

Technical Help / Re: Help PSP -> PL/SQL !!
« on: Saturday 15 January 22 23:14 GMT (UK)  »
I'm afraid I can't add much, but sharing since I've given some thought...

The only link I can find between the Corel image file format and PL/SQL file format is the file suffix PSP.  It is mysterious how they became entwined.

I think PL/SQL is a text file, and it sounds like you have already looked inside. Does the PL/SQL look like it contains the image data (i.e. by the size of the file, or it contains chunks of non-plain text)?

If so, perhaps the PL/SQL was created to include the image in a web page or database. In any case, I would cling on to some hope the image data within a PL/SQL text file can be extracted by someone with sufficient PL/SQL knowledge.

However, I'm afraid that's not me. Perhaps try an Oracle developers forum as well as here?

Technical Help / Re: Canon Scanner/Printer
« on: Monday 10 January 22 22:16 GMT (UK)  »
All very frustrating.

If replacing a wire doesn't resolve the issue, then I'm left resorting to googling, so this may not be of further help, and others may have better suggestions.

Several sites have similar lists of items to check, most of which you have already done - but for reference:
https://www.thewindowsclub.com/no-scanners-were-detected-windows-10

The below page has some further suggestions
https://thegeekpage.com/how-to-fix-scanner-not-working-in-windows-10/

It looks like a wireless link can cause problems, but if you are connecting only through a cable, perhaps not yours.

Hope it gets resolved soon.
