The Common Room / Re: Is Ance$try losing the plot (again) ?

If you can find your browser's history, you may be able to find your original person.

I'm afraid it may require a bit of trial and error, as the Ancestry pages will only have a title to the dataset searched, but as you have a rough time and day of when you got your original result you may be able to track them down.

I find the FamilySearch Research Wiki useful for identifying which of the major family history websites have indexes and/or images for a particular region.

With GenUKI useful for highlighting other sources, often online.

Technical Help / Re: recover deleted photos on latop
« on: Thursday 17 February 22 08:59 GMT (UK)  »
I agree with Chris's - the best approach is to stop using the PC and find a local specialist to help or use a recovery tool from a separate CD or USB stick.
  • If your folders were saved under 'OneDrive' then you may be able to recover a folder (within 30 days I think).  Log into 'OneDrive' through a web-browser (on a different PC) and you will see a recycle bin which differs to the one on your PC.  I guess Dropbox and other cloud folders have similar functionality.
  • A long shot is that you have restore points or Windows Backup turned on and if you right click the parent folder and then 'restore previous versions' there will be versions to restore.  However, unless you know you have turned this functionality on, it's unlikely to be there.
  • Otherwise I suspect it's a case of finding other copies - emails as GR2 suggests, or presentations you have created for others - or from online trees.
However, not using the computer in question (to avoid saving other files over the photos on the disk) and using a specialist or specialist software I think is the safest starting point.

Microsoft suggest you can get a blue-screen through software conflicts

Intermittent and unpredictable issues are frustratingly difficult to diagnose.  The above link suggests rolling back installed software, drivers until you get to a point where the problem no-longer occurs.  In my case, I was still having problems with just a fresh Windows installation - which suggested a hardware issue.

Thinking about it, you would be extremely unlucky to get two bad SSD in a row, but maybe it's the connection? Or something else... :-\  Perhaps roll back software and see if you continue to have issues.  If so, Andrew's suggestion of finding a repair shop to dismantle it, check for obvious damage and clean the interior properly is a good starting point.

The Common Room / Re: Printing trees from Findmypast?

I haven't printed from FindmyPast, but if you are familiar with MyHeritage, perhaps you can export a gedcom file from Findmypast, open a free (temporary) Myheritage account, import the gedcom and print from there.

I agree with Andrew that 3 years is a short-time for a SSD once it is up and running, but if it was recently replaced, it could be faulty from the start.

I had a PC built which had a faulty SSD.  Symptoms in my case were programs (e.g. Office) or services (e.g. Audio) failing to start, and later the system freezing.  It did report an error that the drive needed scanning though. In my case any soft repairs only lasted a few weeks before the problems started recurring, and in the end the SSD had to be replaced.

Having said that, if you were having problems before the SSD was replaced, Andrew could be right and the problem does lie elsewhere.

Perhaps the repairer can take another look, as it clearly wasn't repaired the first time.

Well done for having everything backed up!

Some additional notes
- it appears not all old family history guides provide suggestions on how to record your findings.  I've just dug out "Tracing Your Family Tree" by Jean A. Cole and Michael Armstrong, published 1988 and "Step-by-Step guide to tracing your ancestors" by D.M. Field, published 1982 - neither gave much guidance on how to actually record your findings.  So my suggestion of looking at older books may not be a good one, or at least check before you buy!

- if you wanted to reach out to someone, Josephine appears to have a system

Hi Ray,

I think we've all had times when computers get us down - it's great when they work - but when they are not intuitive and nothing works it's very frustrating.

I'm afraid I can't speak from personal experience on using paper systems, which I realise is what you are seeking, so hopefully others will reply.

However, in the meantime, some quick thoughts

I hope you find the system that works for you.
