These replies are all so helpful - thank you all. ‘Tonepad’ - Your information is particularly helpful - it reassures me that my initial thoughts about the authenticity of this re-enactor’s “1940s” uniform were well founded. Some re-enactors pay great attention to detail and accuracy - some others are less scrupulous, “anything goes”!

Silly me! I've since found this information on the RAFmuseum.org.uk site. That the wearing of  'Other Ranks' Service Dress caps was suspended in 1939 for the duration of the Second World War, and were only re-introduced in 1952. As he was wearing insignia that you advised were LAC (Leading Aircraftman) (which I think is the same rank as Corporal?) am I right in assuming it would have applied to him?

Me again! This photo shows an RAF peaked hat with a shiny peak - would this have been part of the uniform during the 1940s?

Sorry Kiltaglassan, I should have clicked on the links you kindly provided, because my subsequent question (about the eagles facing forwards and backwards) would have been answered. Although that begs another question - were the badges correctly placed, ie facing backwards.

I’d love to believe that women were also able to achieve the same rank (LAC) in the 1940s, but….?

Thank you for these replies. There should have been a second photo, showing the same insignia (is that the right word?) on the person’s right arm with the eagle facing the other way (ie in both cases facing backwards). Does anyone know when these were introduced, and did all airmen - and women! - wear them?

Can anyone tell me what these insignia are? They were seen on the sleeves of two 1940s re-enacters who were unable to explain them

The REME Museum in Lynham May be able to help. Their historian helped me enormously several years ago, providing a very detailed interpretation of my uncle’s service record (he’s since left, so I don’t know if the current historian offers the same service.
