Galway / Re: Fallons/Blakes in Galway
« on: Monday 30 October 06 16:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Paul,
Thanks for your reply. How did you manage to find out he was from Gort, Galway? Were you one of the lucky ones where it's written on a census? My Thomas was a forge labourer and they were living in Goldenhill, Staffordshire in 1864 (it's next to Kidsgrove) and then in Kidsgrove in 1867 when my great grand father Patrick was born. Patrick moved up to Lancashire sometime in the late 1880's to carry on his profession as a coal miner. I don’t know why he moved away from Staffordshire and  chose Lancashire as his new home, I know there were mining communities in both areas but why move?  :-\ I really have no idea about researching my Irish side. It seems that you have to physically go to the records office in Dublin. I need to read up about this.
Bye for now.

Hi Wallie,
Will do. Am I right in thinking that all those mentioned in your posting are interred in Farnworth Cemetery? Please post back. Hope you feel better soon and I will be back in touch when I know more.
Regards, Fran

Hi Wallie,
Have you had time to get to Bolton yet? Just read your post and if not I'll check it out for you as I regularly call in the library to do my research. Let us know.

Staffordshire / POOLE FAMILY
« on: Thursday 14 September 06 20:56 BST (UK)  »
Is there anyone out there who is researching the surname POOLE or has it in their family tree? Ellen (nee Fallon) married Arthur on 13th February 1888 at Stoke-on-Trent Register Office. He was living at 16 George St and she at 53 Park St, both Fenton district. Arthur had a brother called Leonard and their mother's name was Eliza and their father's name was Henry, however, Henry had died sometime before 1888. On the 1891 census, Ellen and Arthur were living at 9 Albert Rd, Fenton with his mother who was by now 52 (Eliza was born in Hanley); Ellen was 26 and Arthur was 28. Ellen was my great grand father's sister and I would love to be able to trace what became of her, however, I have been unable to find her (and the other family members I have mentioned) after the 1891 census. Ellen was born in Goldenhill.
Thanks

Staffordshire / Re: Palin's Buildings, Kidsgrove

Hi Gareth,
Yes the info came from a birth certificate I applied for, part of which I've attached. It's very hard to read as you can see but I'm 99% sure it says Palins Building, no number, no street name, just Kidsgrove (sub district Tunstall, registration district Wolstanton).
I have heard of Mr. Leese and thought about contacting him as I thought he could be the key to finding where the building actually stood. Many thanks for speaking to him on my behalf.
I have been through every page of the 1861/1871 census but to no avail so I'm a bit stumped about where (if anywhere) I can go with this one! I might give the 1881 one a trawl.
I haven't been to Kidsgrove library as yet - are there a lot of photos of Kidsgrove (dated pre 1900) within those 200 images you mentioned?
Thanks again for your help and interest - and yes I agree - quite frustrating!
Regards, Fran

Hi Gareth,
Yes the 2 males you have found on the 1881 are my gt gt and gt grandfathers and I have found them on the 1871 census. They were living at 11 Cooper St, Kidsgrove; Thomas with his wife Mary (nee Blake also born in Ireland) and their 2 daughters, Ellen (b 1864 at High St, Goldenhill and Mary (b 1870 at Cooper St).  On the 1881, Thomas is claiming to be a widower, however, despite obtaining 3 incorrect death certificates and trawling page after page of the burial registers for Kidsgrove, Tunstall, Hanley and Newcastle-U-L Cemeteries (I must be mad!) I have been unable to find "mother" Mary. I did find an entry for a Mary Fallon on the 1881 (whose the right age for daughter Mary), living with a family called Nolan at Liverpool Rd, Kidsgrove; I have not found Ellen on the 1881 as yet.  I have found a later record for Ellen when she married an Arthur Poole in 1888 and then on the 1891 census when they were living in Fenton.
I really have found doing my own family history very difficult!
The Fallon side of my family are catholics and to date I have not visited Birmingham Archdiocesan Archives which is the repository for catholic parish registers for this area. For completeness, I would like to find entries for the baptisms for all the children. I have tried to find out which RC chapel they may have used and visited the most likely one which is now a garage on St. Aidan's St, Tunstall so perhaps at least I know where to start looking when I go to Birmingham (I put a separate posting on Rootschat entitled Roman Catholic Chapels - Tunstall/Kidsgrove area which you kindly replied to).
Also, at this stage, I don't know of any connection between my Fallons and others detailed in the censuses for the area.
Kind regards, Fran

Hi Gareth, thanks again for your postings. My interest in Palin's Building is that my great grand father was born there. Later he lived at Cooper St then Napier St, Kidsgrove before moving up to Lancashire (where I live) in about the late 1880's. His father (Thomas) came from Ireland and at this moment in time I've not gone any further back (if I ever am able to I don't know); Thomas is buried in Tunstall Cemetery which I visited last year. For completeness and to tie things up regarding Kidsgrove it would be nice to determine where this building was. I know both Cooper and Napier St have since been demolished (replaced by a supermarket I think and Napier Gardens). I am in possession of a copy of the 1st edition map dated 1879 so I have an understanding of what the layout was like at the time my ancestors were there so that's something!
Best wishes, Fran

Thanks for the info Gareth which I'll add to my file. I've seen that photo before and been told that the large buiding to the right was an engine room that belonged to the foundry (later to become a picture house I believe).
Since I posted this topic I've not got any further on pin pointing its exact location. I've been right through the 1861 and 1871 censuses for Kidsgrove and can find no mention of it. I wondered if my ancestors might have called it by name after the landlord that owned it  but your suggestion that it might be named after the builder is highly probable. I also posted on the Kidsgrove website but no one to date has come forward with an exact location.
Can I just ask you, I'm interested in how you got access to St. Thomas' parish records - do you live in and around the area or is there some internet site that you've found that can give you access to some parish registers?
Anyway, thanks again for your reply and interest in my posting.
Regards, Fran

Thanks for your reply Gareth. I know the picture you are referring to re: St. Mary's (it can also be found on the link you gave me), unfortunately it's a different St. Marys to the one I'm looking for. Cheers anyway.  :)
