Replying to BumbleB, yes he does appear on the 1901 census.  Would the  "black buttons with a bugle of a Rifle/Light Infantry regiment" imply a British unit?

Interesting information chaps.  Looking at the family history, Thomas (chap in the photo) and his parents and great grandparents appear to have lived in the London and South east area, I cannot see where the South African element comes into it?

The Common Room / William James Clancy 1831
« on: Saturday 11 November 17 15:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hello to all, I am trying, and so far failing, to find out where I can find the details of my great great Grandfathers birth and thus he parents who details may be recorded at that time.  He was William James Clancy and was born in 1831 or perhaps a couple of years either side in 'St John, Middlesex, England.  His marriage from 1858 says his father was James Clancy but there are so many it is too much of a guess.  The 1841 & 1851 censes are not giving up the information either.  The family appear to be made up of Labourers and lived in Brompton for 20 plus years from 1865ish.  Can anybody help track down the birth details?  Many thanks, Stephen.

Hello, can anybody identify the uniforms from the photos attached?  It is my great-grandfather, I am assuming one is first world war by the cap but it is a guess to say the least. The other picture appears to be earlier but I am really without a clue. Any information would be fantastic to know.  Kind regards and many thanks, Stephen.

Unfortunately the original photo does not show any more than the post. The two chevrons means he could have been what rank? The family don't have any of his papers, is there anyway I can find out his 'service' number and apply to the MOD for more information? Thanks again.

Thanks for the swift reply, RAF, not army, thanks for clarifing.  I have just one more image, are you able to comment at all on this?  I know my granddad did not 'leave for war' until June 1943, he would only refer to it as an 'Oversees Absence'  This photo looks to be earlier than the first.

Hello,  can anybody tell me anything about this photo??   My grandfather (fourth from right standing, scruffy hair with 2 chevrons) is in the photo but no family members alive have any information.  It was taken on the 17-11-1944 at the Vatican.  These officers (?) were taking part in a 'Moral leadership' course.  Can anyone throw some light here?  Many thanks.
