World War Two / WW2 Service record decipher
« on: Friday 08 October 21 23:53 BST (UK)  »
Good evening all,

Like others I received my Great uncle's WW2 Army service record recently and whilst I can read most of it there are a couple of key entries I wonder if the folks here could cast their eyes over.

The entry from January 1945 that starts "reclassified to Class A1 (1A??), posted to 634 Reg RA (Middlesex) ?? ???.... I cannot read the next bit or understand what 20ARTY / 6178 may mean

Then "Struck off strength ....................... to 87 LAA (I cannot find a Light anti air bty of 87?)

Then perhaps the last entry is he promoted to Lieutenant???

On the second image from June 1945 he appears to have join the Devonshire regiment but I can't find out what 'RPHKA' stands for??

He looks to have been sent to North West Europe but I cannot make out the word or place name '......UK 10-06-45 Der..........'  His release papers were signed off by the British Army of the Rhine.

Any help in understanding the text would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Many thanks for identifying the uniforms, would you know if there is a card catalogue of names I could search through for these divisions, a look through Ancestry and findmypast with the limited information I have returns too many variants.  My family were based in west London so middlesex does make sense.

Armed Forces / Uniform identification help please
« on: Saturday 10 April 21 15:50 BST (UK)  »
Good afternoon,

I have these two photos in an old Victorian photo album of my family however there is limited detail, can anybody identify the uniforms?  These photos appear not to have been taken by a photo studio as they are not on card with no detail at all on the reverse.  The chap with the sporran (?) has written on it 'Mac Baron' that could be a name or other, the second photo, the chap with the Cain has the word 'Strachan'.  Any help with identification would be great. Many thanks Teletran

Thanks for the great feedback all, he looks young for an officer perhaps (one of links states the collar badge was for officers) , I see Max states it likely taken before 1908, any further thoughts on a decade? Many thanks.

Hi, I'm trying to identify this chap who appears in a family photograph album I have but alas there are no details save the photo itself, I suspect his surname is Emerton and his family were from Hertfordshire, can anyone identify the uniform?  Dating through F.W. Clark is proving a challenge also.

Many thanks

Hi MaxD,

The family believed it belonged to William Knapp (great uncle) but he was RAF (went down on BD233 over Holy Island), his number was 1375619 and he was an observer.  However I am being told perhaps the cap was that used by the Royal Army Pay Corps but alas nothing on the internet I have found so far.
