Thank you for your words of wisdom, OR should I say, caution, regarding research of the ARKLE Clan.

I am not researching in any particular web site, but more or less picking up bits of information from wherever possible.    Mainly I have been delving in to Free BDM's and Ancestry.com for the Census results.   My big problem is that any ancestors I am researching have a very vague past, so that doesn't make it too easy either.

Northumberland / Born in Botany Bay - Northumberland
« on: Thursday 12 August 10 23:51 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if any Rootschatter can help me solve this one.?

On the 1911 Census I have a James BROUGHTON, Merchant Seaman, aged 25 years living in a Boarding House at 7 Grove Villas, Poplar, London and he shows that he was born in Botany Bay, Northumberland.   Therefore he was born about 1886.

I am in possession of his Medal Roll for War Service during World War 1, which shows him born in Ashington, Northumberland, in 1886.   The information engraved on his Medals correspond with the Medals I have in my possession.   Also, I have a copy of one of his Crew Lists for 1914 which shows his Next-of-Kin residing at Hirst Road, Ashington, but, unfortunately, no Surname is given.

Now, I have searched BDM's and Census for a James BROUGHTON born Northumberland County in 1886 but can;t find any information.   Advice I have received from my 'close' relations here in Australia, say that he was born James WALKER and that he changed his Surname when he absconded from his home as a Lad.

Is it possible that there may be some BROUGHTON or WALKER descendants living in Northumberland or Australia who can assist me with my search.?    Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Jim, in Queensland.

Thank you ever so much for your email concerning Edward ARKLE, however I can't find any relationship with my Edward at the moment.   I will investigate further and get back to you, if necessary.    The Edward that I am looking for was born in Newsham, Northumberland, about 1867, but no doubt there could be a relationship there somewhere.

Hullo Nurmal,

Many thanks for your email regarding the possibilities for the Ancestors of my Walter Broughton, but I must let you know, that since your last correspondence to me I have received a notification the the chap I am looking for was born in 1886 in Ashington, Northumberland.   A copy of his World War 1 Medal Roll from the LMA, is the proof.

Thank you one and all to those lovely persons who have endeavoured to help me find this most elusive character over the years.

Regards, Jim

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Re: BROUGHTON James - born Ashington - 1886

Hullo Michael,

You certainly have a host of information for me and I do appreciate it.    I have done a fair bit of research, such as I can from Australia, and the only certain information I have on this elusive character is a copy of his World War 1 Medal Roll from the National Archives in London which show that he was born in Ashington, Northumberland, in 1886.   A copy of his Marriage Certificate here in Australia shows his Father as a John BROUGHTON, also a Sailor, but I have never been able to substantiate this element.   The only Sailor I could find on any UK Census lived in Norfolk and he was already married with family.

I am inclined to agree with you, in that I think that he may have been born under a different Surname.   The Surname WALKER has been bandied about our house for quite a few years but I can't get any concrete information on that one.   It is possible that his Mother could have been a WALKER and then  remarried.   That is one of the reasons I thought that I may be able to pick up some information from the address of his NOK being in Hirst Street/Road, Ashington

Hullo 2zpool (Janis),

Thank you for your reply to my query.   Unfortunately, Death Certificates in South Australia do not have the names of the parents of the deceased.   His Marriage Certificate shows his Father as John BROUGHTON, also a Sailor, but that is all.

Hullo Diddymiller,

Thanks very much for your rapid response to my request.   Your observation deserves deeper research and I will continue on that line.   It certainly has merit.

Northumberland Lookup Requests / BROUGHTON James - born Ashington - 1886
« on: Monday 26 July 10 06:48 BST (UK)  »
James BROUGHTON was, subject to my information, born in Ashington in 1886.   He was a Merchant Seaman during the early 1900's to the 1920's and from information that I gleaned from the UK Archives his Next-of-Kin resided in Hirst Street, Ashington.   That was in 1916.   Unfortunately no house number or Surname was given.   As I am seriously searching for any information regarding his parentage, etc,, I wonder if there are any relatives out there who can assist me.?   I have searched all possible Census for the periods concerned but cannot find any ties.   Would it be possible that he did his seamanship training as a lad, in Newcastle or thereabouts.?   The earliest information I have on him is when he appears, in Australia, as an Able Seaman in 1915.   Thereafter, he remained in Australia, and I have all of his Records from that year on.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
