Cambridgeshire / Parish of Wimpole, Cambridgeshire

There is a magnificent website at http://www.wimpole.uk.com with transcripts of many registers and inscriptions going back to the 16th century.
I couldn't see any mention of it on Rootschat so thought I had better mention it here.

Occupation Interests / Haybinder
« on: Sunday 15 August 04 21:22 BST (UK)  »
If someone was a haybinder in 1850s England would he have used machinery to do the job or just muscle. Was it a skilled job?
If he made hay while the sun shone what did he do the rest of the time?

The Common Room / Is microfiche on the way out
« on: Monday 26 July 04 22:13 BST (UK)  »
I belong to a Family History Society. In one of its recent magazine issues, another member wrote in to describe how because he lives 40 miles from where the FHS is based and because his local library has got rid of all fiche readers, he is now unable to read his own microfiche which he has bought in the past. His solution to his own plight is to ask the FHS to put its data online.
The FHS's response to this is to say, not unreasonably, that the members of the FHS who have spent their own time and money in preparing that data may not want it to be used by others commercially. And on top of that there are legal and accounting considerations too.
But the aspect which surprised me the most was that the comment was made by the editor of the magazine that "fiche readers are on their way out". I can readily understand this in relation to records which are being captured for the very first time and where CDs are appropriate. But am I to understand that the microfiche which I sometimes torture my eyes with at the Record Office are to be replaced by something more user-friendly. All of them? And soon? What do the rest of you know or think about this development?

The Common Room / Soldiers and Sailors
« on: Friday 16 July 04 21:54 BST (UK)  »
I came across these two marriages in Harwich in the Essex transcripts at Essex Record office ref: T/R 203/49 pages 3036-3116:
1804 Jun 10 GRISLEY John Abraham of HM Ship Pegasus m. PACKWORTH Martha widow of HM Ship Pegasus
1809 Mar 28 ENSLIE Robert 76th Regt. of Foot widower (signs EMSLIE) m. GREASLY Sarah of 76th Regt. of Foot. Licence.
I had heard of women being allowed on ships in Napoleonic times or earlier. And I believe every army has had its camp-followers. But these entries conjured up an image in my mind of equal opportunities existing far earlier than I had been told. ::)
It also brought home to me how difficult research must be for anyone who has ancestors who were soldiers or sailors before, say, 1850 particularly if they are unaware of the fact. If there is no website already providing for this purpose, what do you think about a portion of this website being used solely to (a) list known marriages involving soldiers or sailors before 1850 (say) and (b) list known births of children of soldiers or sailors before 1850 (say). Anyone who doesn't mind spending a few minutes noting a few of such events as they do their own research could be a big help to others. I have no personal axe to grind here, honestly....

Completed Census Requests / 1861 Census: St. George in East/Whitechapel - Marshall
« on: Saturday 26 June 04 21:23 BST (UK)  »
Can you look up: William Marshall age 50
                            Jane Marshall age 50 (wife)
                            Marianne/Mary Ann Marshall age 26 (d.)
                            William Marshall age 24 (son).
They were at 47 Morgan Street Whitechapel in 1851. I believe they were all born in Romford, Essex.
