Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Shanklin pier ballroom
« on: Friday 11 September 15 03:24 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I have a photo of my parents taken in 1950 and, beneath it, it says Shanklin pier ballroom.  Can anyone tell me if this was actually on the pier or close by ?  I'm hoping to find a photograph of it.
Thanks,
Carolyn

Cambridgeshire Lookup Requests / Whittlesey 1859-1863
« on: Wednesday 19 August 15 23:36 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I wondered if anyone has access to Whittlesey registers (more likely to be St Andrews than St Marys) who could check the addresses on the following entries please:
23 Jan 1859 Sarah Whitehead to William and Elizabeth
1861 Elizabeth to the above
21 February 1861 John to the above.
I'm not sure if these are birth or baptism dates.  I suspect the addresses will be either Horsegate or Peterborough End.
Thanks for any help
Carolyn

Canada / Missing page on 1921 passenger list
« on: Friday 31 July 15 22:27 BST (UK)  »
I know that Lena Horsnell departed Liverpool 12th March 1921 on board the Melitta.  The ship arrived in St Johns New Brunswick 21st March.  The passenger list is on the Libraries and Archives Canada website, and it appears the names are alphabetical.  However, the page with Lena Horsnell on it is not available for viewing.  Does this mean it is missing or damaged, or have some pages been withheld?

Canada / Identifying a subdistrict on 1911 census
« on: Thursday 30 July 15 00:34 BST (UK)  »
I am researching the Horsnell family of British Columbia.  In 1911, they were in the Yale and Cariboo subdistrict 1-54.  Is it possible to identify exactly where they were?  It is likely in the Okanagan and might be Vernon, although they were also associated with Errington on Vancouver Island.
Thanks.

Down / Griffiths Survey Maps and Plans
« on: Saturday 27 June 15 19:47 BST (UK)  »
A transcription at Find My Past for Drumhirk, Kilmood Griffith's Survey Maps & Plans says that the occupant count is 60.  Yet the Valuation shows only 27 occupiers.  Does anyone know if this means that 60 is the total population count for Drumhirk?  The property description for Hugh Nelson (who was a farmer) is also shown as Herd's House, offices and land (just over 6 acres.)  Would this be the name of the farm or something else? Other places are just called house, apart from one other which is described as Caretaker's House.
Thanks
Carolyn

Down / Missing family in Griffith's Valuation
« on: Thursday 25 June 15 07:41 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find my John and Jane Gamble of Drumhirk, Kilmood in Griffith's and in the Revision Books  but am not having any success.  I know that:
1  When daughter Margaret applied for a pension, it was confirmed that she was aged 1 in the 1841 census and aged 9 in the 1851 census for Drumhirk, Kilmood.
2.  Son Alexander, born about 1842, gives his birthplace as Drumhirk after he migrates to County Durham
3.  Marriages for some of their children confirm Drumhirk as the place of residence: Agnes 1846, Robert 1855, Alexander and David, both 1868, and Hugh 1879.
4 Jane Gamble died in Drumhirk in June 1877 aged 77.  She is said to be married (I can't find a death for John, though). The informant was Mary Ann Gamble, her daughter-in-law, of Megherascouse.

The family gradually drifted into various townlands in the parish of Comber in the 1860s and 70s, but the only son I can find is William in Ballyrush.  Research tells me that only the absolute poorest people were omitted and that they are actually very few.  I don't think this Gamble family was destitute.  Although some of the boys were labourers, one was a stonemason, another a blacksmith.  I understand that in the case of a house under the value of 5 pounds a year the owner still had to pay the tax, but does this mean the tenant would not be named?  Is there any other reason why a family might not show up in Griffith's?
Thanks, Carolyn

Down / Newtownards/BallyBlack Paisleys
« on: Monday 15 June 15 07:19 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Could anyone please tell me which church Kilmood Presbyterians would likely have attended between c 1800-1850?  I can't find any reference to there being a Presbyterian church in Kilmood itself, although Presbyterians apparently formed about 83% of the Kilmood population.  I have a James Paisley, farmer of Drumhirk, Kilmood, for whom probate was granted in 1837, and wondered where he might be buried.  Would Presbyterians be buried in a Church of Ireland graveyard?  I also have a William Paisley of Drumhirk who was granted a license for a fowling piece between 1832-6, and my David Paisley and Agnes Gamble, who married in December 1846 at the Newtownards register office, were both said to be of Drumhirk.  Unfortunately, his marriage certificate says his father is unknown, so I suspect he was illegitimate.  He was apparently born c 1822.  If anyone can suggest where I might start looking, I'd be very grateful.
Thanks, Carolyn

Lincolnshire / Calendar of Lincoln wills 1660-1700
« on: Friday 20 March 15 03:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I wondered if anyone could tell me if the Calendar of Lincoln wills 1660-1700 is online, please?  I can find calendars for all other date from the 16th century to 1800, but not this part.  I'm trying to find out if any Buckberrys/Buckburies etc of Billingborough left wills in this period, particularly John 1688.
Thanks,
Carolyn

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Welford Road Cemetery ?
« on: Saturday 17 January 15 02:34 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know where Catholics who attended Holy Cross Chapel on Wellington Street would be buried please?  I'd like to find the grave of Eliza Jane Newton, who died in January 1876, Halford Street, to see who she is buried with, but I'm not sure if this would be in Welford Road or somewhere else.
Thanks,
Carolyn
