I am trying to find my John and Jane Gamble of Drumhirk, Kilmood in Griffith's and in the Revision Books but am not having any success. I know that:
1 When daughter Margaret applied for a pension, it was confirmed that she was aged 1 in the 1841 census and aged 9 in the 1851 census for Drumhirk, Kilmood.
2. Son Alexander, born about 1842, gives his birthplace as Drumhirk after he migrates to County Durham
3. Marriages for some of their children confirm Drumhirk as the place of residence: Agnes 1846, Robert 1855, Alexander and David, both 1868, and Hugh 1879.
4 Jane Gamble died in Drumhirk in June 1877 aged 77. She is said to be married (I can't find a death for John, though). The informant was Mary Ann Gamble, her daughter-in-law, of Megherascouse.
The family gradually drifted into various townlands in the parish of Comber in the 1860s and 70s, but the only son I can find is William in Ballyrush. Research tells me that only the absolute poorest people were omitted and that they are actually very few. I don't think this Gamble family was destitute. Although some of the boys were labourers, one was a stonemason, another a blacksmith. I understand that in the case of a house under the value of 5 pounds a year the owner still had to pay the tax, but does this mean the tenant would not be named? Is there any other reason why a family might not show up in Griffith's?
Thanks, Carolyn
