Northamptonshire / School for the blind in Northampton?
« on: Monday 09 April 12 00:18 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I am researching a Jabez West, who was born in Cottingham in 1855.  He was blind, possibly from birth, and I have found him in 1881 at the Royal Normal College and Music Academy for the Blind in Upper Norwood, Surrey.  Although he was 25, he is listed as a pupil.  He seems to have retained close ties with the College after he left, performing in concerts at the Crystal Palace on College prize giving days.  He also sang baritone at nearby Cromwell Hall and worked as a music teacher and pianoforte tuner.  What I don't know is where he was between leaving Cottingham and entering the College, which opened in 1872.  Unfortunately, I can't find him on the 1871 census.  Does anyone know whether Northampton had a school for the blind in the 1860s and 70s? Does anyone have any ideas as to how this would all have been financed?  He came from a family of labourers.
Thanks,
Carolyn

The Common Room / Copyhold question
« on: Sunday 11 March 12 23:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, so my apologies if it isn't.  Is anyone knowledgeable about copyhold tenure?  I have a good idea of what it was, but I'm unsure about two aspects of it.  Was a copyholder in the 18th century a landowner or a tenant or both?!  I have read that it was a form of land ownership and that if a copyholder wanted to sell his land, he had to get permission from the lord of the manor, then surrender it in the manorial court, so the lord could then re-grant it to another "tenant."  I think I'm confused by the word "tenant," which to me implies renting, not owning.  I can only think that a copyholder owned his land, but had to pay a nominal rent to the lord (which had replaced services due to the lord in Medieval times) and get his permission to sell it.  Am I correct ?  Also, according to the SOG's Ancestral Trails, fee simple and fee in tail apply only to freehold land, yet these terms are used to describe my ancestor's holding and his land was said to be copyhold by solicitors investigating the title to the land.  Any ideas about this?

Thanks,
Carolyn

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Wilbarston Church and The White House
« on: Saturday 10 March 12 23:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I wondered if anyone attends Wilbarston Church, who might be prepared to look for a plaque inside the building, please.  In his will of 1748, Henry Barton of Middleton asks that his body be buried inside the church as close to his pew as possible.  I'd love to know if his age is given or whether any other family members are commemorated with him.  I have tried contacting the Rev Sally Hughes, but, so far, have had no response.  Henry also refers to his house in Wilbarston, which he says is known as The White House.  Does anyone have any knowledge of this building?
Thanks,
Carolyn

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / St George's, Leicester Look-up please?
« on: Thursday 23 June 11 04:40 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I wondered if anyone has access to the marriage registers of St George's Church in Leicester, please?  I am interested in the marriage of Maria Newton to Leonard Smilt Rolleston on 22nd January, 1857.  I am hoping there is an indication that her father is James Newton, carpenter. I know I would get this info from her marriage certificate, but we have a postal strike here in Canada, which could go on for a long time.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Carolyn
