The Common Room / Re: Coming across Catholic marriages...

Thanks for your reply Valda. Yes, the parents were both the same. The children were actually baptised at 4 different churches. The first at CE and all the rest at 3 RC churches in Preston, as the familiy moved. I can only think they converted, there would be no other reason for an RC couple to marry or baptise a child CE in late 1850s -early 60s. It just doesn't make sense otherwise.
Maybe someone else reading this board, may know if a record was made for conversion to RC.

Occupation Interests / Richard Forshaw sailor in Hesketh Banks
« on: Tuesday 09 May 06 20:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,
I have a Richard Forshaw born in1836c Hesketh Banks Lancs. He married Elizabeth Hodgson/Reynolds in 1858 in Preston, This Richard later became a brewer. I found on his marriage cert' Richard's father was also a Richard Forshaw a sailor. I have been unable to find either of these Richard Forshaws in the 41, 51 or 61 censuses. I now wonder if they could have been at sea, or in port on a vessel. Any ideas how I can find them?

Hi Valda,
Would you know anything about converting to Catholicism. I have a marrige occured at St John Preston CE in 1858. Their first son was also baptised there. All susequent children were baptised in St wilfrids Preston which is RC. I can only presume the family converted. Would there be any records of a conversion? I wonder if the parents would have to be re-baptised and confirmed.

Hi There
Sorry, I have tried both 41 and 51 for you. I can find no Marian Louise Cowburn born  in Italy 1835ish living in Preston. I have also tried an open named search for any Cowburns, born Italy living in Preston, no result.

Sorry to have mislead anyone. I wrote St Wilfred's records were available at the County Archives Preston. Checking back through my old mail, a friend had told me they had got the information for St Wilfred's, at the Lancashire Records office in Preston. Having said that, I think these are the same place.

Hi There,
Have you found the St Wilfrids records yet. I was lead to believe they are at the County Archives Library in Preston. I don't know for certain, as I have not looked at them there myself yet. It may be worth a phone call. Also you could try the Register Office in Preston.
Maybe you could help me. It is a long shot. I have an Elisabeth Hodgson married Richard Forshaw at St John Preston CE in 1858 under her stepfather's name of Reynolds. Her mother was Alice b 1806c she was widowed in 1841 so I don't know here husband's forename or Alice's maiden name yet. In the 41 Elizabeth was only 1. Making the year of death for Mr Hodgson 1839 -1840 in Preston. They had 2 other children that I know of: Richard b1836c and John 1839c in Preston. Do you have any of these names?
I also wonder, do you or anybody reading this, know about converting to RC. I think Elizabeth converted between her marriage in 1858 and her 2nd child Thomas Forshaw who was baptised RC in St Wilfrids in 1862. Will there be a record of conversion and also would Elizabeth have been re-baptised and confirmed? I presume those too would be recorded.

Since I have written this message, I have Alice Hodgson's and William Wrennall mariage cert. They married in 1864 at St Wilfrid Church Preston. She was a spinster and Alices father was James Hodgson deceased, a brickmaker. This means she was not a widow as stated in 1851 census and the children all had her surname. So I can only conclude she was an unmarried mother when she met William or the children were William Wrennall's but he couldn't marry Alice, as he was already married. He went on to marry her after they had lived together for over 20 years, when his 1st wife died.

Berwickshire / John Haig and Agnes Hall in Duns
« on: Sunday 22 January 06 17:21 GMT (UK)  »
Help!!!I have been following John Haigs of John Haig, from Duns. In my husbands family, it seems to have been a family tradition, for John Haig to named their first son John, as far back as this, until present day.
John Haig b 1796 Duns, married to Grace White b1812 Ayton. He was a farmer in Chirnside according to his will.  I have just found in his death cert' he died 31 Aug 1856 on Murray St, I presume Duns because it was registered there. Does this street still exist?  According to the certificate he was buried in Preston.
His Parents were John Haig 1751-1801 and Agnes Hall 1756-1840. I have managed to find a Marriage for this couple 15/5/1795 in Swinton and Simprim but nothing further for Agnes. John was a tennant at Broomhill. Does anybody know anything about Agnes? I know they lived in Duns. I haven't been able to find a birth for this John Haig there? I think his parents are John Haig and Alison Miller.
Since posting this I have found an MI in Preston & Buncle graveyard. All those above are buried in the same grave. The grave started with John Haig b 1715. He is the father of John Haig b1757. Unfortunately the wife of the first John Haig is not buried there. I believe she could be Agnes Millar does anyone have them in their tree or have anything on them?
Thanks
Pam

Berwickshire / Re: Haig Family of Duns & Preston/Bunkle Parish
« on: Sunday 22 January 06 16:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Ron,
I am researching a John Haig b1834 in Duns. His wife was Margaret Turner. His parents were Grace White and John Haig . He was a grazier (farmer) according to his will. They had several children besides John above. There was a Mary, Peter, Robert, James, Thomas, Hector plus others. All these John Haigs, it can be very confusing...there's a family tradition even to this day in my husbands family.... John Haigs named their first sons John.

Does any of this ring any bells,
Regards.
Pam
