Essex / Hazeleigh address
« on: Saturday 30 January 16 12:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

Just wondering if someone could point me in the right direction regarding an address in Hazeleigh.

I have a map dated 1928 with the cottage name on it. A later map dated 1958 has the same property with a new name.
I can't find the cottage on more modern maps, however there does seem to be property there on google maps.

Who would I best be getting in contact with regarding building etc and planning for Hazeleigh.
The cottage in question was where my mother in law was born in 1920 and although we searched for it a few years ago were unable to find anything at the time, however I have only just found these maps.

Thanking you in anticipation

Cheers

Just read the Old Bailey transcript and apparently the address was 38 Gray Street, Waterloo Road, the home of William Davies ( not Matilda's relatives after all ).

It mentions his wife, but not her name and nothing about his occupation, so I'm still none the wiser.
It did make interesting reading though.

The family business was still in operation and in 1889 in The Daily News (London) Friday Sept 13th
there is an article under Labourers Strike, which mentions John Harding.

Anyway more digging still required

Just been doing a little more digging and found that Matilda's sister and her husband were living in Queen Street, which is in the Waterloo Road area, in the 1881 census. Maybe they were lodging with them at the time, but Matilda moved out after the fire!!!!

Shame there wasn't an address in the newspaper article, but it could be more probable now that it was him!  Shouldn't jump to conclusions yet tho', keep an open mind.

PS  Have to agree with you Lizzie, could make a big difference :P

Hi Trish

Thank you for your interest and reply, very kind of you.

The case you found does sound promising, however I am a little concerned as it states William as a labourer.
My William was an iron moulder, the family business and on the 1881 census when he was in prison it does state his occupation as an iron moulder.

I am going to send for the death cert I found for1882, if it's him there maybe a clue in it!

Thanks again for your help, certainly worth bearing in mind, silly man!

Cheers

Thanks John, have got Ancestry, but couldn't find that before, will look now.

Found that

Also a possible death for William in 1882

A 1891 census for Matilda with a couple of children, stated widow.

Will have to get some certificates.
But my main problem is was it him in prison and what for?
