Thanks so much for the updates, appreciate. Edmund and Alice as you say married 1865 have a child Martha Alice in 1869. In 1871 Alice is with her grandparents on census at Spotland and it states she was born Stacksteads.Nearby Edmund and Alice are on census at Spotland. Edmund a Labourer and says born Cowpe. In 1881 Edmund and daughter are with his Mother in Spotland and he is a Stone Quarry Man. (He states Single)He also says born Newchurch which is near enough the same as Cowpe.Alice is with her mother (Mercer) in Spotland stating she is married...but
no husband with her.Was it harmonious or acrimonious or just convenient. In all probability Edmund dies early  in 1887 age 46. (Your own best guess)he is buried 2nd April  at St Nicholas Church in Newchurch .Abode given as Blackwood which I think is Stacksteads area. May be they will have some details on him at place of his final rest St Nicholas? Im just thinking outloud if we can get a confirmation it was Teddy The Champion.

WOW, brilliant find, this Edmund Law easily can be him, and YEAH I do have credible evidences that Teddy Lowe got married in 1865, again according the article which I have located on BNA. What do you have on Law...in 1873 he is here in States, and back home in late 1879, I have him actively wrestling in Lancashire in 1880, he was wrestling his old nemesis Henry Cousel of Bury and some new generation mat stars. Were you able to find his date of death??? Having it I hope I can locate obituary on BNA, but yes thats the FIRST real candidate to be Teddy Lowe. Amazing JOB !!!! Sincere appreciation.

Alrighty, thanks, so what I did I just messaged them both on Facebook, Cock and Magpie and Halfway House...so we shall see what they may have on the origin of their pubs. The thing is I was thinking on looking it up in Rochdale Trade Directories...they may have it in the 1860's???

The thing is in some papers they call location of the pub Whitworth in some other place its Facit. That clip which I just posted speaks of exact location of it...even names streets, but unfortunately it doesnt tell me much, sadly I am not familiar with local geography. Also according one article dated 1866 there was a bus which was going from Three Crowns Inn of Rochdale to Hargreaves Arms Facit Rochdale and the fair was 4d. And yes it was mentioned in that article that proprietor was "Teddy" Lowe. That guy Edmund Law b. 1842...what was his primary occupation? I am assuming Teddy was a collier since thats what he did for living outside wrestling during his 6 year stay here in America.

I am not quite familiar with local Whitworth geography does it look that it can be the same place? I mean Halfway and Hargreave's. Thanks again. Kind regards, Ruslan

Wow, thanks for sharing all this info with me, my appreciation. So Facit is Whitworth, wow and you think theres a chance that the current public house could easily be located in the same original Hargreave's Arms building from the 1860's. I may contact them and ask what they know about the origin of that current pub. Thanks again. Kind regards, Ruslan

Dear Sirs,
thanks, I am leaning towards idea that whatever "Teddy" stands for was his middle-name. And yeah it could be Edward, Edmund or even Theodore. I did my best with Ancestry, still NO RESULTS. But yeah BritishNewspaperArchve give different dates of his date of birth. And it always was Whitworth. But like I mentioned previously in his earliest matches he represented Newchurch which made me thinking that he was actually from there. It's UNBELIEVABLE but the best wrestler of XIX century is so hard to trace. In America his name was spelled Edward Law.

Lancashire / Teddy Lowe, Lancashire Wrestling Champion, Whitworth

Edward (or Edmund) "Teddy" Lowe of Whitworth,  Lancashire was undisputed champion wrestler of Lancashire at 126lb-134lb weight class in the 1860's (The Golden Era of Lancashire Wrestling). He held the most prestigious  wrestling titles of that era The Copenhagen Grounds Championship (Newton  Heath, Manchester) and The Higginshaw Grounds Championship (Higginshaw,  Oldham). In the XIX century Teddy Lowe was considered the best  pound-for-pound wrestler Lancashire ever had. According some  newspapers Teddy Lowe was born on July 4th 1841, but other newspapers  speak of June 24th 1841 as his date of birth. Its not clear whether  Whitworth was his place of birth or not but its worth to mention that  his earliest competitive results show him wrestling out of Newchurch,  Lancashire, so theres a chance that Newchurch was his actual place of  birth. In the 1860's he sometimes wrestled out of Crankey Shaw, Rochdale.  I was also able to locate fact that in late 1865 Lowe got married and was  owner of hostelry The Hargreave's Arms at Whitworth, near Rochdale (according  some other newspapers actual location of that hotel was at Facit,  Rochdale).  Lowe also competed internationally, in 1873-79 he was wrestling here in USA in Pittsburg-Philadelphia areas (PA). He also worked as a coal miner at Washington, PA. Later he was back to England and in early 1880s he was  still competing at that time he was resident of Stacksteads, Lancashire.  Unfortunately I wasnt able to locate his obituary yet. If anyone has any info on Teddy Lowe please feel free contact me directly at any time, I would highly appreciate that.
Thanks. Kind regards, Ruslan Pashayev
