Wigtownshire / Re: One last struggle to trace this ancestor!

What information does the marriage give  :-\

If you mean the 1817 marriage, then very little info - both of the parish after proclamation of banns.

Ahh, I assumed she meant the 1842 one.

The 1817 marriage is basically the same...

This is the link on Scotlands People, not sure if you can open it directly from here...

More or less, it just says "James McPherson and Elizabeth Armstrong, of this parish, married on October 30th, 1817, by Reverend J (John) McKenzie, reverend of this place."

Not much at all. It's a church register. It just says...

"Robert Shaw and Susan McPherson, in Myroch were married, 29th Sept, 1842."

This is from the... (Old Parish Registers Marriages 890/ 30 96 Kirkmaiden) Page 96 of 118.

Not sure that will do us any good :/

Wigtownshire / One last struggle to trace this ancestor!

Hey everyone,

So, after a lot of searching, I'm about ready to give up on searching for this ancestor.

I figured, though, that I should give it one last try.

I am trying to find more on a James McPherson.

He married Elizabeth Armstrong in Portatrick Wigtown on October 30th 1817.

He and Elizabeth had 3 children, Susan, Eliz(s?)abeth, and John. I am descended from Susan McPherson, who married Robert Shaw on September 29th, 1842 in Kirkmaiden.

Any help you guys can offer on tracing back James McPherson would be amazing, I'm trying to find more about the McPherson roots for my father!

Thanks again!

Wigtownshire / McPherson family member in Wigtown? I'd love some help!
« on: Saturday 11 November 17 15:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone - me again!

So I've worked a lot out for my family tree but I am now totally stuck yet again. Funnily enough (funny for someone else, not for me!) I am stuck now on the first ancestor I was specifically trying to find - urgh!

So, anyway, I have found my ancestor, James McPherson. I have no birth or death date. All I know is that he married Elizabeth Armstrong on October 30th, 1817, in Portpatrick, Wigtown. Elizabeth was born in 1796 in Portpatrick, and died on May 26th, 1877.

James and Elizabeth had a daugter, Susan McPherson, who was born April 22nd 1822 in Stonykirk and died 26 October 1899. She married a man named Robert Shaw on September 29 1842 in Kirkmaiden. I am descendant of this line and am trying to trace back the McPherson side.

So, again, I have no info at all on James and his line is the specific one I am trying to trace back.

Do you all have any thoughts?

As a secondary... this link is to a snippet of a document on my Google Drive account that was too large to post here as an attachment.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1O_fOKesOngq6-GOpQ8e25v5hI5ri4a1t/view?usp=sharing

This is the death certificate for that Elizabeth Armstrong. At the time of her death she had remarried to a man named Robert McGarvie, but on that death cert it lists James McPherson as her first husband. I cannot read the other info below it... I'm also not sure if it lists some kind of death info for James McPherson either - can any of you help interpret this?

Secondly, I know it lists Elizabeth's mother as Susanna Armstrong nee Rennie, but I cannot at all read Elizabeth's father's name. Any thoughts on that as well?

As always, the McPherson line is the primary, but I am hoping that MAYBE some detail on the Armstrongs could help lead me there somehow.

Thank you so much in advance!!

At least you have now confirmed the June 6th birthdate which does tally with the 1939 register entry for 'your' Robert.
Isobel

This is true - at least I got that!

I'm trying to figure out how to confirm this is the right robert... the ages between the marriage cert and the birth cert tally up correctly... and I have found many copies of the marriage cert for William Harrison and Mary Ann Jones.... but the birth cert for the Robert I ordered has Adam Harrison as his father.

Does this sound like it could be relevant to the William Adam Harrison I found on the censuses?

I don’t want to complicate matters anymore but thought I would just post this to bear in mind when you start searching for Robert’s father.
You know from Robert’s marriage that his father was William.

I had a quick look for other Harrisons in West Derby district

1871 3802/80/25
Thomas Harrison 32yrs Carter b Wellingore

1871 3832/56/14
William Harrison 26 yrs Carter b Boothby.  *previously mentioned as yours

But there is also this man
1871 3802/79/24
He is transcribed as William Harbeson 28yrs b Wellington, Lancashire
But it should read Harrison and Wellingore -although it still shows as Lancashire. His wife though shows Lincolnshire and there is a marriage.
Here is the F S link

He is a Drayman so it is interesting that Adam Harrison mentioned earlier is a Waggoner and there are a couple of Williams who are a Carter and a Drayman - similar occupations.

Heywood

Hello everyone!

So, I received the birth cert for Robert Harrison.

I am now extremely confused....

So, I have that Robert Harrison was born on June 6th, 1889, in Everton North, Liverpool. His mother is listed as Mary Ann Harrison nee Jones.

His father, however, is listed as "Adam Harrison." Not William Adam or anything else, just Adam Harrison.

On his wedding cert, where he married Ethel Salter Phillips, which I know to be fact, Robert Harrison's father's name is William Harrison.

The William Harrison I found in the censuses always appeared to be William Adam Harrison as his full name... so I don't know if I should consider this accurate or false.

What do you all think about this?

Monaghan / Re: Help with an ancestor from Monaghan?
« on: Friday 03 November 17 15:49 GMT (UK)  »
Yes Marriage of James Wilson & Elizabeth Scott 23 Jan 1857 in Tynan Armagh (this place about 10miles from Monaghan) is a bit vague and no source quoted.

On second thought, this may not be correct.

I just got Thomas Wilson's wedding cert from Liverpool. It says he was 23 in 1884, making his birth year ~1861, not the 1859 birth that I found.

His father is listed as James Wilson, deceased at the time.

I can't find any Thomas Wilson with James Wilson as a father born in Ireland in 1861 with a couple year filter on either end.

Hrm......

Any thoughts?

Scotland / Re: Ancestor help? McPherson
« on: Thursday 02 November 17 16:18 GMT (UK)  »
Might be difficult to find out about James McPherson- the OPR for his marriage might be worth a look but may not have much detail. The Wigtownshire Pages on Rootsweb are very good and are always useful when researching this area. Gravestone sites are also worth a look but has to be said tha many of us researching in Scotland do find that we do with some lines that we come to a point where we cannot go back any further.

William

Hrmm, might be a sad reality. THanks for all of your help!!!
