Kent / Alice Pain - what happened to her?
« on: Thursday 22 February 18 14:33 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to link recent family with an Alice Pain from Thanet area in Kent.  So far the only one found is Alice Pain b. circa 1896; father Arthur R 1859-1930 and mother Hannah H (nee Honour)1863-?
Siblings were Arthur b. 1899; Emily b. 1895, Elllen E 1890, Harry P 1887, William R 1885-1919 and Amy Louisa 1883.
Would anyone know who she married if her surname changed please.  Grateful for any info.   :)

A long shot perhaps, but does anyone know of/recognize what I think is a 'cafe' for German soldiers in Bouconville, France 1916?  Also if anyone is able to translate any of the writing on the back I'd be grateful.  Thanks.

Armed Forces / Re: Could anyone shed light on these uniforms?

General interest reading this only, but have just been watching a Time Team special which showed a photo of men with what looked like the identical uniforms.  They were tunnelers under enemy lines.  Is this something ASC would have done?

Staffordshire / Re: Place recognition

Threapwood was the best guess we had too.  But also Micklewood is a good alternative to try.  The 'downstroke' appears to one of those made by the census people who invariably covered important bits!  Thanks for trying everyone.

Can anyone identify the name of this place please - 3rd line down.  Seems to suggest Staffordshire: ancestry has it as Mrafewood, but there doesn't seem to be anywhere with that name.

'Despair' is certainly a good word for it!  There are just toooo many James Pembertons to be sure of any and 'Threapwood' is only a guess for the word Mrafewood as on census.  Thing is too, there is one in Flintshire and one in Staffordshire, which is (supposedly) where our James was born.  Problems, problems....

Good points, and yes, I have all the information that could possibly be gleaned apart from what happened to James! It does seem he left her 'holding the baby!'.  Hannah remarried a William Davies is 1872 - not sure if she said she was divorced or widowed though.  There are just too many James Pembertons around!  Thanks for looking y'all.

A real conundrum for a lot of people for years trying to find out about this James!  Poss born 1831 or 1837 (birth cert. not that clear) and born according to Ancestry in Mrafewood, Staffs.  There doesn't seem to be a place with that name & the nearest we think it might be Threapwood.  Married in 1857 to Hannah Hughes they lived near Wrexham, but by 1871 census he had "up and left her".  She remarried, but is there anyone out there that might know whatever happened to James?  :-\
