Suffolk Lookup Offers / WETHERINGSETT Parish Records
« on: Friday 09 June 06 02:06 BST (UK)  »
I can look up births, marriages and deaths in Wetheringsett (cum Brockford) up to 1900. A lot of the entries for 1500-1700 are unreadable but you never know your luck!

These are microfiche records so a name and an approximate date are needed.

Please post any request in the Suffolk Lookup Requests board.

Cheers, Debbie

Technical Help / Help please...with fiche reader
« on: Tuesday 16 May 06 01:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi there  :)

I have a question about parts on a fiche reader. I bought one 2nd hand which works but won't focus. I've taken it to bits and had a look at it and everything seems to be ok. However, inside are 2 lens which both have a threaded collar on them. The lens and collar drop into 2 holes. With the front off the reader I can see that when I turn the focus button this turns the collar on the lens in the centre. There's a slider bar that moves the lens from side to side so you can pick which lens is used. There is nothing there though to thread the collar to so when it is turned using the focus button it just goes round in circles! Should there be a 2nd threaded fitting which maybe goes in the hole first or in from the underneath so that when the collar is turned it raises or lowers the lens using the threads? That doesn't sound very clear to me so I hope you can understand what I'm trying to ask! And never having used a fiche reader before I'm not sure what parts there should be.

Any help would be much appreciated as at the moment I can only read my fiche by adjusting the slider bar verrry slowly until it comes into focus and have to do this everytime I move the fiche, even if it's only half an image - not only annoying but not doing a lot for my eyes either!

If someone who has a fiche reader could have a look and see if I've got parts missing it would be very helpful. I don't know if it's relevant but it's a Micron 780A reader.

Many thanks,

Debbie

Dumfriesshire / Re: Smith/Bell marriage in St Mungo - I can't find it

Good morning ladies  :)

Thanks for those tips, very helpful. I didn't realise that some of the records on IGI were submitted by people, I thought they were all 'official'.  That probably explains why there are so many entries for some all showing the same details I suppose. I may have to go back and check through what I've already pulled from there and check what sort of records they actually are just in case ay  :-\

I had cottoned on to the surnames in Scotland as both my grandparents have surnames as middle names - Rae and Lewis - both their mother's surnames. I had also realised they liked to use the same names but I didn't know there was usually a pattern to it - I thought it was just lack of imagination! Something else I can check with the families I have so far and see if they follow a pattern.

There's another query you may be able to help me with - I'm trying to find the best ways to search the census's for Scotland. I've found the free 1851 census on the net and I was going to buy the 1881 census cd from LDS as it says it includes Scotland. But on their web site the census search doesn't include Scotland. Would you know if the complete Scotland census is on there? Or if there is anywhere to buy them on either cd or fiche?

I have to say, looking into my Scottish family is making me very unsettled! I so want to visit places called Haugh of Urr, Sweethearts Abbey and Monybuie. They sound so wonderful! Guess I need to start saving ay.

Many, many thanks for your help

Debbie

Hi Clare,

Those 2 'marriages' must be the records I found on IGI - it never occurred to me that it might be the banns and not 2 seperate weddings!

I also got Thomas' birth year from the 1851 census where he is recorded as being aged 37 and born in Tundergarth. So I suppose his actual birth year could be 1813-1815. His father's name was from the IGI so yes, it could be wrong. How do you tell which records are member submitted?

I've only been doing this for 5 months and most of that has been my English side and so far I haven't used the IGI much at all. Researching in Scotland is very new to me - and seems to be much more complicated although I'm sure I'll cotton on eventually  :)

Monica, I hadn't even tried yet to find their deaths - that's awesome, thank you so much  :D. I have a copy of the LDS BI VRI and a search on there didn't find much - except 2 christenings in Middlebie for a Helen and a George with Thomas and Jean as the parents. I'm liking the Helen and George though - for Jean's mum and hopefully Thomas's dad! I guess the records for St Mungo and Eskdalemuir aren't included in the VRI at this stage.

The birth record you found for Jane Bell seems to fit - she's called Jane on her son's marriage record but Jean everywhere else (just to confuse me!) and her dad being called William matches as well. The person I'm searching from, my gr-grandad who would be Jean's son, is called William as well. I don't know, I just get really confused. My William had 3 kids, 1 called William and those 3 kids had 8 between them and among them and their offspring are another 7 Williams (including my dad) and 1 Wilhelmina. What I wouldn't give for some really unusual first and surnames. To make matters even more confusing my Scottish family also seem to like the name Nicholas - for girls! So I'm looking for blokes and need to find women. I make no wonder my brain's tired  :o

Many, many thanks for the help - much appreciated

Dumfriesshire / Smith/Bell marriage in St Mungo - I can't find it
« on: Friday 05 May 06 01:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I'm trying to find the marriage of Thomas Smith & Jean/Jane Bell supposedly on the 5th September 1837 at St Mungo, Dumfries. I've found them in the 1851 census living at Bankhead, Eskdalemuir with 5 children. I've also found them in the IGI with 9 children. This is where I found the marriage date but there's nothing on Scotlandspeople.

Thomas was born 1814 Tundergarth and his father is called George. Jean/Jane was born 1818 Hoddam - these details match on IGI and the census. I've looked for Thomas' birth on scotlands people and it's not there. There are 3 for Jean in 1819 but I haven't looked at them yet (no credit  :-\) as I have neither of her parents names to match.

To confuse things even further there is another marriage on IGI for Thomas Smith and Jean Bell on 3rd September 1837 but at Dryfesdale instead! I've also looked for this on scotlandspeople but no luck there either. I'm taking the St Mungo marriage as mine as they have a son William born 1850 which was my starting point.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated as I don't know where to look next  ???

Many thanks,

Debbie

Kirkcudbrightshire / Anybody know of Fellrigg or Port Cheer?
« on: Sunday 09 April 06 23:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I'm looking for 2 places - not sure if they are places or house names though  ???

The first is Fellrigg - this appears in books belonging to my grandfather who was born in Upper Monybuie, Balmaclellan. It's written as Fellrigg, Moniaive.

The second is what looks like Port Cheer - on the parish record for my grandad's birth as where his parents were married. It's written Port Cheer, Rerrick in 1895.

I've looked on the old-maps site and found Upper Monybuie but can't find either Fellrigg or Port ........?

Anybody know of them or have any suggestions?

Many thanks, Debbie

The Lighter Side / Re: Your First Smith?

My tuppence worth - my dad's a Smith and I married a Smith - yeah, I know, stupid of me - so when I started this I thought I'd start on my mum's side as she's a Thorpe. I'm back to mid-1800's and so far I've already found another 2 Smiths  >:(

I've told both my daughters not to even consider bringing a Smith home as he won't be allowed in the house ;D

I'm really coming to dislike the name Smith I have to say! Obviously my dad's a Smith but I've been doing my mum's side of the family and already found 2 Smith's in there AND my husband wants me to do his family as well and, yes, I married a Smith!

I've told both my daughters if they ever bring home a Smith he's not setting foot in the house  ;D

Got to go, my daughter's screaming for the net!
Hope to catch you tomorrow TTFN

Hey gadget I'm so glad you put MI's ! I've been thinking that meant Marriage Index but obviously, reading your comment, I've come to the conclusion it means Monumental Inscription?  I think you've just saved me from some major confusion   :o
