Inverness / Inverness Sheriff Court Paternity Cases 1799-1806 and 1825-1869
« on: Tuesday 09 October 18 15:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Just thought you may like to know that we have added Inverness Sheriff Court Paternity Cases 1799-1806 and 1825-1869 to www.scottishindexes.com.

These are cases where the mother of an illegitimate child takes the father to court to force him to pay aliment for the child.

You can see the full coverage of our free index here: https://www.scottishindexes.com/coveragecourt.aspx

Hope this helps with some of those brickwalls!

Scotland / Scottish Prison Registers - How to use them and where to find them
« on: Tuesday 09 October 18 14:57 BST (UK)  »
I have just written an article about Scottish prison records that you may find useful.

https://www.scottishindexes.com/learningprison.aspx

When we discover that our ancestors came upon difficult times, we have a greater opportunity to delve into their lives and find out more about them. As a large proportion of the ‘working class’ Victorian population was in prison at one point or another, there is a high chance that one of your ancestors will appear in a prison register.

I hope this guide proves to be useful.

Inverness / Inverness 'paternity' records
« on: Monday 06 November 17 15:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I wanted to let you know that our volunteer has begun indexing Inverness 'paternity' cases. Entries from 1842-1850 are now online.

For a number of years, we have been indexing ‘Actions of Affiliation and Aliment’ found in the extracted decrees of the Scottish Sheriff Courts. We have so far indexed 25,192 entries and the index is free to search on our website. These are cases where the mother of an illegitimate child takes the father to court to prove he is the father and force him to contribute towards caring for the child.

You can search by both parents or just one. It can be quite interesting to search by 'defender', that is your male ancestors, and see which of them had a child you know nothing about! http://www.scottishindexes.com

Hope you find something useful.

« on: Thursday 31 August 17 15:35 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone,

A few years ago we indexed Jedburgh prison records 1843-1869. We have just completed an index to Jedburgh prison records 1811-1841.

You can search all our prison register indexes here: www.scottishindexes.com/prisonsearch.aspx

As always you can view the index for free online. These records are interesting and useful when you are researching your family tree.

I hope this index helps with your research.

Kincardineshire / Stonehaven Sheriff Court 'Paternity cases 1846-1916
« on: Thursday 31 August 17 15:24 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Our project to index Sheriff Court 'paternity' cases has reached Stonehaven! We have indexed cases from 1846 to 1916.

If you have not used these records before you will be amazed at the detail they contain. When a woman had an illegitimate child she could take the father to court for maintenance of the child and/or prove paternity.

These records can sometimes be the only surviving record of who the father of a child was. Even if you have some information on a birth certificate these entries give you more details and that can be interesting and useful.

When we trace our family tree we come across illegitimate children who usually stay with their mother or her family but how many illegitimate children did your male ancestors have?

Our index has been created by a volunteer and is free to search: www.scottishindxes.com

Hope you find something useful,

Emma

Hi everyone,

Just to let you know Margaret has now finished indexing Ayr Sheriff Court extracted decrees up to 1917. I hope these records prove to be useful to your research.

Many people are finding surprising results by searching fathers only. Usually children stayed with the mother, if you are descended from the father you may not know about an illegitimate child. Go to www.scottishindexes.com/courtsearch.aspx and just fill in the 'defender' boxes and you will find out which of your male ancestors had secret children.

Aberdeenshire / Re: Aberdeen Sheriff Court Paternity Cases Now Online
« on: Monday 01 May 17 17:20 BST (UK)  »
We were looking for a paternity case in the boxes of Aberdeen processes last Monday and noted all paternity cases we found as we went along. We have added 134 more 'paternity' cases to our online index. We now have entries for Aberdeen for the following years:

1752, 1761-62, 1802, 1811, 1817, 1820-1822, 1830, 1834-1837, 1857, 1875, 1900-1917

Please be aware though that because the cases are muddled up in the boxes there may be more cases (before 1860) which we have simply not found yet. In time we hope to add more cases to the index.

We have been adding more cases to this index. The 'Extracted Decrees' from 1837 to 1878 are now fully indexed. An interesting note about this court is that the child is often named. As you can see in this example we have added the name of the child to our index where it has been given: http://www.scottishindexes.com/courttranscript.aspx?courtid=6015104
