I have been searching to find a husband and wife in the 1911 census for some time, but without any success:
John Thompson born 1864 in Witherley, Leicestershire
Mary Thompson (formally Udall, originally spelt Nudall) born 1858 in Church Broughton Derbyshire
They were married in Atherstone, Warwickshire  in 1884
In the 1901 census Mary is living with her husband John Thompson at 85, Stockwell Head, Hinckley. There are no children.

The 1891 Census gives the Family Group: living at Lutterworth Road, Attleborough, Wks:
John Thompson 28
Mary Thompson 29
Charles Edward Thompson 12  Son

(Charles Edward born 1879 at Harlestone, Staffordshire. He is  probably step son or adopted son - illegitimate son of Mary Udall  (Listed with grandfather as is son in the 1881 census). Therefore Charles Edward Udall has taken the last name of Mary's husband John. The Parish records give this Charles Edward as Charles Edward Udall - the Illegitimate son of Mary Udall).

If anyone can give me some guidance as to where to find John and Mary Thompson in the 1911 census it would be appreciated. One may have died and the other remarried but so far I have drawn a blank.

Guidance would be much appreciated.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Who was the informant?
« on: Friday 06 January 12 13:43 GMT (UK)  »
Just received a death certificate in the hopes of finding out more about a person in my tree and have basically drawn a blank.

However, the qualification of the informant is given as "Causing the body to be cremated". Does this mean that he worked at the Crematorium or was a friend who organised the Funeral? He is not related as far as I am aware. See the details below:

Technical Help / Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 - Problems
« on: Monday 02 January 12 19:37 GMT (UK)  »
I have installed Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 on my brand new computer running Windows 7 64 bit. I did not appreciate the problems.

The first time that I installed it the computer shut down as soon as it was loaded and from then onwards it shut down within seconds of the computer booting up into windows. I used system restore to take the computer back to before Elements 10 was installed. The computer kept on switching off after windows had booted up.

Took it into the technician who thought the PSU was at fault and he put in a new unit.

The computer then worked fine until I installed Elements 10, and again the computer switches off as soon as Windows as booted up. I have again used system restore to take the computer back to before Elements 10 was installed still it switches off shortly after booting into windows. The computer however, will run in safe mode for as long as I want - but this is of no real use to me now!

What can I do to get things to work properly again?  I have a brand new computer that I am unable to use as a result of installing Elements 10.

I am typing this on my old computer running Vista  34 bit with Elements 10 installed and all working well.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

The Common Room / Stringer Advice
« on: Sunday 11 September 11 19:20 BST (UK)  »
Just had the E-Mail below from someone who has a surname that is in my tree but not linked to my tree. If anyone can provide information that can help him I would appreciate it. Also advice on how to advise him would be appreciated:

my name is J***** T**** and I live in North Carolina. I have been doing some research on my great grandfather Tom Hardie Stringer. Very little is known about him by my family and my grandmother is becoming very frail and i would like to find out some things about him before she passes. I know that Tom Hardie Stringer was married to a lady by the name of Florence Annie Congrave in 1898. I have found two sons one born in 1900 and the other in 1904. At some point he left England and came to the US. I do not know if he left his family behind or they came with him. From all that I have heard they stayed behind. While here in the states he married Alvertie Willis which is my great grandmother. I am trying to find some information about the Stringer family, who his other children were, are any of their descendents still alive, and etc. I don't know who you are and you may not be able to help, but I was wondering if you get help get me pointed in the right direction or give me some hint on finding out this info. Thanks J**** T****

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Leicestershire / How can I find out if this person on trial was my ancestor?
« on: Tuesday 08 February 11 23:34 GMT (UK)  »
I have just found someone convicted of stealing fowls in 1878  at Ashby de al Zouch, Leicestershire, who could be my acestor. The problem is here we find  Enoch Payne (born 1843 in Leicester) in Ashby de la Zouch in 1878  when I thought he was in Yorkshire, there is no other Enoch Payne in the 1871 or 1881 census of this age. No children are born to his wife between 1877 & 1881 so could it be my Enoch? He was in Ashby in 1871 with is wife, but moved to Sheffield in about 1872. He was in Sheffield with his family in 1881. Is there any way I can get more evidence that this was (or was not) my ancestor. Here is a transcript of the newspaper article:
TRIAL OF PRISONERS .
Leicester Chronicle and the Leicestershire Mercury (Leicester, England), Saturday, October 19, 1878; pg. 10; Issue 3599
Enoch Payne (35) Labourer, was charged with stealing 18 live tame fowls, value £1 16s., the property of James Dyer, a builder, at Ashby de la Zouch, on October 2nd. – Mr Jacques prosecuted, and prisoner was undefended.
Prosecutor has a barn on Burton Road, Ashby, in which he keeps fowls. On the day  named he found that his barn had been broken into, and a number of fowls stolen, two of them being left in the roast dead.
Inspector Brewit spoke to seeing footmarks about the barn and, tracing the trail of feathers of fowls to prisoner house, where he found dead fowls, which were identified by the prosecutor. He afterward apprehended prisoner, who said he knew nothing about the fowls. When reminded that he had five fowls in his house, he said that a man who he did not know bought them to his house. In the barn the officer noticed that someone had fallen back into the dirt, and the prisoners coat was dirty and had small feather on it. Prisoner’s boots were compared with footprints near the barn, and they exactly corresponded. Prisoner admitted having fowls in his procession, but said he did not know they had been stolen.
Prisoner was found guilty and sentenced to 12 months hard labour.

If anyone can help me solve this conundrum I would appreciate it.
Andy
